I have an 87 FJ60, see thread here Junkyard 60
Long story short it accidentally became my daily driver and the power steering has been intermittent at best. If you cranked the wheel slowly it would kinda feel like power assist but when you really needed it, I was elbowing my passenger in the face to get it to crank hard. I read all the info on the pump being sold out and only expensive ones remaining...I WILL NEVER PAY $350 for a pump! So I ordered my seal rebuild kit from Cruisercorps and today I finally bit the bullet... only to discover it wasn't the seals that were bad. Notice a bunch of the stupid little springs were broken in many places!
I had half ass attempted a power steering pump swap before but my heart wasn't in it so I gave up. Today, it was do or die because there was no way in heck I was gonna put that cluster of crap back together and back in the 60. I currently have *many* Toyota's and I recently parted a 87 4wd short bed with a 22re not to mention I had a random extra FJ60 power steering bracket. HMMMMMMM.
Of course there are a ton of cheap mini truck PS pumps around because there was 2.8 billion of them sold! Not to mention a rebuilt one is like $60, I can install 6 of them before I wish I had bought a new FJ60 pump
I poured a beer, said a little prayer and took the grinder to the bracket and removed material until I could drill a second hole for the bolt. The FJ60 bolts are 3.5" apart and the 22re bolts were 3.25" apart. The pump had to sit lower in the valley so that is where I did my grinding. I would grind and then test fit until it was low enough that the other ear had sufficient metal for me to drill a second hole. Front of bracket.
Back of bracket. I had to grind the lower area for clearance of the bolts of the PS pump. IT WILL NOT REUSE THE REAR BOLT HOLE. You can hack that off if you want or build some little connector bracket if you are worried about it. I figured two fat bolts going through some stupid thick metal in the front was more than enough to hold it.
22re pump bolted in place
Inlet, and outlet pointed down.
Stock VS modified. It really wasn't more than a quarter inch of grinding, maybe took 15-20 minutes.
You must use the mini truck pulley. I know its slightly narrower but it still works just fine with the belt. The FJ60 pulley does bolt up but it is either out to far, or if reversed, it sits too far in.
It did barely touch 3 of my fan blades so I removed the lock washer off the pulley bolt for more room and used thread lock instead. Also removed maybe an 1/8"x1" from those blades that touched it.
Reservoir... Used the factory 87 Mini remote reservoir on the right vs the fj60 connected reservoir. Things to note, the remote reservoir has a larger hole to feed the pump...interesting...
It just so happens that there are two of the three holes already drilled into the fender well. Mine is desmogged so otherwise you will have to find a different home for it. Also removed the pointless headlight pisser reservoir. Mine was broken and the whole concept of the pisser is ridiculous.
The high pressure line had to be tweaked here and there to get it at the right angle, I deleted my steering cooler lines ages ago because the lines were smashed so at the moment I'm not running one. I cycled the steering twice and fired it up and it works perfectly! Anyone need a PS pump rebuild kit and some spare parts for a 60 pump?
