Well, the 60 was just supposed to be a quick flip but I've kinda grown attached to it. It's officially my DD and even though its a freaking tractor I really like the hum of its woeful and pathetic 2F. Just thought I'd post up progress on its rebirth. I'll probably keep it around for a couple years or longer at this point.

The story: Garett told me about a guy with a $500 FJ60 for sale at last McGrew. After meeting him and seeing pictures of it I was intrigued. He rescued it from the junkyard with a bad engine and then purchased another engine from the junkyard and stabbed it in with his tractor. I traded him a radiator for gas money and $500 and I met him half way in between Bend and Medford. The 60 was half torn apart with a bunch of parts in the back and bunch of big pieces in the bed of his truck. He gave me the uhaul trailer to return in Medford. When I got home I had to pull it off the trailer with the Suburban because the 60 wouldn't even roll.

Over the summer I started assembling the easy stuff and realized I was missing driveshafts, exhaust, harmonic balancer and a ton of other parts. I emailed the guy I got it from and he still had about half of the parts I needed so my wife and I drove up to Bend and spent the day touring breweries and collecting Landcruiser parts. I love Bend not to mention the parts far exceeded $1000 if I had to buy them separately. The balancer alone is $400!

The hard part of the 60 was the dash was completely torn apart. Evidently it had a bad heater core and someone took it all apart to get at it. I looked at the 18 pieces of ducting and all the little brackets and half ass tried to put them together repeatedly. One evening I must've been feeling smart or had just the right amount of beer in me because I just went for it and everything fell into place after about 2 hours.

The interior turned out remarkably clean although the pictures are better than it actually is.

There was nothing in the engine bay bolted down including the engine and transmission which were just sitting on the perches. It was missing a bunch of things like an alternator, fan and wiper motor not to mention the distributor was non-op. I eventually got it to run but the gas was literally 10 years old and once the engine cooled off again it glued 4 of the valves to the guides which mangled four pushrods. Luckily Kief came to my rescue for the umpteenth time on this rig and dropped off all kinds of parts I needed including a bag of push rods. Thanks Kief! I was debating on rebuilding the top end or swapping to a V8, neither of which I wanted to do. I soaked the rockers and valves in all kinds of solvents and lubricants and pounded on them with a hammer to free them up. Finally I was down to one sticky valve and Kief had dropped off a plethora of pushrods so I figured I had one freebie to try and get the engine going again without pulling it apart. I drained 15 gallons of nasty old gas and put some new stuff in the tank. It fired right up! I adjusted the valves and have been messing with smog and carb stuff ever since.

I got some 15% remaining but evenly worn 33" BFG AT's from my brother in law and had a spare set of 4runner wheels from Ty. Loaded them all up yesterday and got them mounted and I'm into my wheels and tires for a total of $44! I did have to use spacers on the front end since the offset is far from factory Cruiser specs.

I think they really update the look of it.

Been fixing and replacing stuff constantly. The heater core still has a leak so I have no heater at the moment. I'm working on getting all the gauges functional since maybe 2 outta 8 work. I installed a speedometer cable two days ago and I need to install a water temp sending unit soon. I put in new front brake pads... did you guys know this has 4 piston calipers? I randomly found a shackle lift in the back of my orange 55 new in the box with all new bushings and bolts. Should lift it about an inch, I'll be doing that next week. Also on the lookout for some OME heavy lift springs. That's next along with winch and armor and birf job.

After the bacon run and its numerous fuel starvation issues the 60 eventually just died on me and it sat for a month or so. It turns out the brand new electric fuel pump got enough rust tainted gas in it that it could no longer push gas despite having two filters before it. So I figured this time I was gonna fix it right and ordered a new mechanical fuel pump and a new Trollhole carburetor. While I was at it I bought a new clutch master cylinder to replace the old leaky one.
Pulled the old mechanical pump and noticed this... the arm for the pump was broken off! Then I remembered that there is a "special" spacer that must be installed on certain fuel pumps so that they don't sit too close to the pump cam. This engine didn't have one at all! Also the pump seems to be fairly old which is even more weird, so how long has it been in there and broken?

Went down to Toyota and ordered a new spacer, you can see how much of the old pump arm was missing!

Ordered a new Aisin master cylinder off of Rockauto... notice the TEQ inscription near where the pushrod goes in on the old one... notice how it's ground off on the new one. :hmm: I love getting NEW Toyota parts but not having to get raped at the dealership for the EXACT SAME PART!

Also installed some new to me seatbelts courtesy of Kief. Still gotta install the Trollhole carb, but at least now it's back on the road!

Yup, look for Aisan or however you spell it, search ebay, rockauto, partsgeek, etc. and they are great quality and really cheap. Don't ditch your old carb. Nice man...

I ordered a Trollhole carb a few months ago but never had a chance to put it on. Today I had a spare half hour and slammed it on there. I can't believe what a difference it made, its idles so low and smooth now you can't even tell its running. I went for a test drive and goosed the throttle in the driveway (gravel) and accidentally lit them up! Impressive for a 2F! Also no more coughing on partial acceleration and for the first time ever I HEARD AND FELT the secondaries open up! It's like the worlds slowest sports car but it changed the whole personality of the truck! OME heavy lift and bumpers are next. Can't wait to check my new found gas mileage too, dare I say double digits?! Although I did get 10 in town last time I checked... but the time before that was 7.

Can I ask where you got your tires mounted? I've got to get mine mounted/balanced somewhere around Medford/Ashland. I also have some spare parts laying around from my restoration, if you need anything.

I got the tires done at quality tire just because they're dirt cheap and I didn't want them balanced. Doesn't mean they're the best... But probably the cheapest. Aric works at Firestone on Jackson too. I've got a buddy who is manager at Costco tire but they'll only mount them if you buy them from them but they do have sales all the time.

Finally making some progress!
The power steering barely functioned and its pump is available from a few dealerships for the tune of $400! They sell a seal rebuild kit for $60 and I started to rebuild mine only to find a bunch of broken parts in there. Those springs are all supposed to be the same size and, no, the rebuild kit doesn't come with them.

I decided to try and adapt a Toyota mini pump since they are plentiful and cheap unlike EVERYTHING for the LandCruisers... After a little grinding of the factory bracket and an additional hole drilled it fit perfectly! The steering still isn't perfect but its much better than it was. I believe the box might need a rebuild and/or this pump is a little tired. Either way its very tolerable now, and worse comes to worse I spend $55 on my next pump instead of the $400.

The FJ60 is now my DD and with winter coming up I didn't have a functioning heater, well the rear heater works but the main heater core leaked. I was going to get a new one but then I realized the core was good, but it was the o-ring to the extension pipes that were both bad. I'm not really sure why they even put a joint right there because you can still remove the heater core without removing the top pipes. I was going to take it to a shop but then I did a little research on brazing a heater core. 15 minutes with my cutting torch and the worlds thickest roll of solder and it was perfect...perfectly ugly, but functional and non-leaky!

During the reassembly of the dash I decided to install the inclinometer outta my old 85 4runner. They came stock in Australia and went underneath the stereo but they are also $500 to import so I was happy with my dash top custom version. I was also sick of not having music so I put in Jerod's questionably obtained cd player that he gave me... And it cranks out tunes via the bone stock 4 1/2" speakers... which sound awful! But they're better than nothing at the moment.

Found a guy up in Washington making weld-together bumpers for a good deal. His company is Northwest Trail Innovations. Ordered a rear bumper with a receiver so I can finally do a little towing and it was only about $250, after a few hours of welding and grinding I was done. Front one will be done later this week.

Also found out that Amazon.com has OME lift springs! I didn't want to pay for $1200-$1800 plus $400 for shipping for a freaking lift for this thing but I did want the OME springs since they come in HD. So I figured out the part numbers and started plugging them into Amazon. Springs were $110ish, each, for the front and $180ish, each, for the rear. Front's are the HD 2" lift (couldn't find a 3" lift for the front and ARB's website sucks) and the rears are the HD 3" lift. And the reason I went through Amazon.... FREE SHIPPING!!!!!!!!! I couldn't believe they shipped all four of these things for free, it almost killed my UPS guy they are so heavy! Absolutely nuts! This is the stock rear pack VS the new rear pack. Little different I'd say!

So as it sits today, dash and interior is all back together, rear bumper and lift are on, front winch bumper + winch to be completed later this week. I'm most stoked about having a heater and music of all things!

Looks great, why are the wheals not centered in the openings.

That is courtesy of the OME springs, I'm hoping they flatten out a little so the rear wheel will get pushed back. Can't say I was impressed with OME at all. They also put the rear shackle at exactly vertical which is not optimal. Then they try to sell you some anti-inversion spring hangers because they didn't make the springs long enough. I may pull a leaf out of the rear just to get it to sit down a little but we'll see, maybe I'll just load the crap outta the car trailer and take it for a spin. I measured the center pin and if I flipped the spring around it'd put the axle back 5" which is way back there, not to mention the springs have arrows on them pointing forward so they are definitely installed correctly. Oh well.

I think my old ones were 2 1/2 mediums but were way beefier than the OEM. I took one leaf out and it road great w/o a load but squatted when loaded for camping.. I got used to the stiff ride but that looks way to stiff. The heavies you have look super beefy, I think two full length leaves (vs. 4?) would be good and leave the OL's on for big loads..
