Hi All,

I drive my 1987 FJ60 2F daily and I'm dealing with power steering issues.

The car came with an already rebuilt power steering that was leaking, I used it until it died and took it to a shop that said no way they can rebuilt that for a second time. Toyota pumps are not available any more and as they were not good from the factory I not going the second hand route.

There are not so many available but I bought an aftermarket that never worked appropriately and currently I have no power steering (with wheels on the air its basically the same to steer the wheels with the engine running or not, no leaks no weird noises from the pump nor the box, belt moves the pulley, good ATF levels). I'm following threads for troubleshooting...

Saginaw appears to be the option for US market but I have to ask: Is there a Toyota option? I live in Costa Rica and there are plenty Hilux, Hino, Prados, 70 Series, 80 series so on... not a purist but definitely will love to keep it Toyota. Costa Rica market is small so there are not so many fabrication shops so I like the idea of investigating the options before taking the car blindly to a shop.

@Umanad - If you wanted to stick with Toyota, I would look toward pickups - 1980s or 1990s. Some have remote reservoirs. You may have to fabricate mounts. Many people in the US have adapted mini truck PS parts to FJ40s, so you wouldn't be the first. Are there junkyards in Costa Rica where you can study various pumps and find one that's close enough to work? Nothing wrong with Saginaw, but may be harder to find there.

Thanks for replying, definitely I will need to get hands dirty on this an find a place with many pumps on hand to see what it's required, I was planning on going to the dealer with the pump on hand and see what they have.

I already found one shop that did something similar but they hesitate to disclaim the actual pump event though I inquiry the fabrication of the support.

I got In touch with some Australian folks but no secret sauce was reveled.

It's the engine mount my main concern here.

Hope to be able to como back to this soon.
