I have a fully stock 1985 FJ60. 2F engine passes smog and is driven daily in California. My OEM distributor is in bad shape and I was considering an hei replacement but on every one I see, the cam gear is mounted collar down andI don't believe this will clear the hole to allow it to full seat. Here is a photo of the OEM for reference vs new.

Most of the HEI aftermarket distributors marketed for the 2F are actually for the Chevy I6.

The gear on my hyperspark is also inverted but it clears.

what makes your current distributor in bad shape?
the stock distributor is made to last as long as the engine.

it can be overhauled, I am actually experiencing intermittent ignitor failure when cruising. Exploring options. Distributor just needs new cap, weights, springs, rotor and some lubrication and cleaning.

I am going to try to get a measurement of the uh...orifice today.

And the FJ60 "big cap" distributor is the cream of the crop for F-series engine distributors; turns in ball bearings, not bronze bushings as in earlier models, and electronic (no points). So good that they are a common upgrade for many 40-series owners.

The only real weak points in the FJ60 dizzy are the little bushings on the spring pins, and the vacuum advance mechanism being prone to rust, especially if the distributor evacuation system is not hooked up or functioning.

If you're going to get one of the HEI, then the only one is the Davis Unified Ign, the rest are Chinese clones and I don't even know if the Davis are USA made anymore. Research the HEI on a Land Cruiser before you buy to see the possible issues. Also, if you're subject to biennial testing in Kalifornia, the HEI won't pass visual smog inspection.

JimC www.TLCPerformance.com can rebuild your stock distributor, but turn-around is usually a while.

I'll stick with it. The green wire mod may have been the fix I needed.
