First of all we have no smog issues here in Alabama and I'm trying to get my Daily driver back on the road 1987 FJ60 after the gaskets between the exhaust and intake manifolds died @ 218,000 miles.

My mechanic wants to remove the air rail and plug the holes since the air bypass valve connecter is broken off and the hose has long since rotted away.

What Ill effects (if any) will this cause in the 2f????

any help appreciated.

I'm trying to contact Jim Chenowith right now to get a rebuilt carb. I suppose he needs to know if the air rail won't be used. Any other residual effects from the removal?

Are 1/4" NPT plugs the best solution for sealing the air nozzles?

Talk to Jim C and see if he has any other suggestions. You'll probably want to do a full on desmog - talk to him about it. I do know that he'll set up your carb to run without the equipment, and that there is a difference.

NPT plugs? not sure. One thing I've done in high heat areas is use brass - if you could find brass to plug it up with is another matter. I used Brass bolts on the exhaust manifold for my TR6 - they don't rust, they stand up to the heat, the don't seize...just a suggestion though.

To plug those holes you need the hex head 1/4 npt steel drainplugs from the dorman-brand assortment in your local parts joint. These fit flush (actually deep into) to the hole, install with a 3/16 allen wrench. Ask them for their selection of drainplugs, and be prepared to canvass a wide area to round up all six.

what dpes NPT stand for ???

Bob over at TPI sells those hex head plugs for when you remove the air rail.

The 3FE has two of them on the head so you could probably get the exact part from toyota.

Hey, DeepSouth-
Is you air rail itself in good shape? Or is the rotted fitting on the rail?
I'm looking for a new (to me) air rail cos I broke mine and have a nasty little
exhaust leak.

the rail is probably o.k. but the main hose to the ABV (air bypass valve I think that's what it's called) blew off and the fitting on the front of the ABV is rusted and damaged so we can't re-attach it.

I feel dayum sorry for the folks that have to deal with emissions testing because the fitting can't be purchased and the ABV is about $300 USED if you can find a one.

Now I need a Carb. and tried to contact Jim C. unsucessfully :-\
