so i just bought i rig and drove it going back home for about 12 hours. the owner told me he used to get about 16 or 17 mpg and i din't really belived him but i drove it home nice and easy like i like to cruiser and i got raning from 17-19 on my fill ups 17 being driving up and down hills comming from california 19 on straights.. anybody heard of this before? i thought my odometer was bro or something but checking it with mile markers is on... any thoughts? has the stock 6l with a crazy california emision hook up andrequilt carb and block.. anybody any ideas i never hear of these many MPG on this kind of rig

Hi, The most I have ever gotten was 17. Stock, tuned well, no add ons and keeping it close to 2,000 rpms. Mike ( Ps. This is hard to do ! )

I think I got just under 17 one time a long time ago. I had just done a tune up and changed all the fluids. It was all stock with 33x12.50-15's I hand calculated and adjusted for tire size and my gearing. I was within a tenth.

Now the poor old girl sits parked in storage getting neglected. :crybaby:

What size tires does it have on it?

Tailwind for sure! Or a well maintained, bone stock rig going 60mph with a tailwind.

The best I've done (calculated because of tire size) is 15mpg. 33x10.5x15 and 3.7 gears.

PS- MPG thread of the week! :hillbilly: :bounce:

Check your plugs. You might be running lean!

Hey guys, interesting stuff. I'm from India. Just a month ago, i drove 600 kilometers in my 1988 HJ60 4SPEED. Got myself a decent 8.75 kmpl (kilometer/liter). Converting that to MPG, its 20.58. Everything stock on my cruiser except my rims and tyres. Sometimes it fluctuates. When i drive even longer journeys at about 80 kmph (kilometers/hour) i get 8.9 kmpl -- 20.93 MPG. It is possible.

Have checked mine twice to confirm.
1998 FJ62 3F carburetor engine with H55F manual. 31/10.5R15 tires (2.4Bar)
5th gear doing 2500rpm gives me 70mph
Speed and distance taken with GPS
Fuel consumption is 18.3mpg on the open road. :flipoff2:

Diesels and five speeds don't count!

Gonna come down to weight (tires, bumpers, stuff in the car) and how well maintained the vehicle is.

Bone stock FJ60 with one driver is the lightest you can get. Even down to the number of leaves in a pack of leaf springs. (Excluding parabolics)

Alaricikyticky, are you converting to Pomme MPG or Yankee MPG??

ahh you got a diesel, well still quite good depending on which conversion

Same for you Petoors

alaricikyticky doesnt have a conversion, he has a factory HJ (I6 diesel)

I've never seen so many people say that they beat the milage (MPG) as noted on the window sticker of the vehicle when new (USA Market Vehicle / Gas engine). A brick with a carb and 4 speed...

Are you guys driving 45 mph and taking 30min to accelerate and coasting down hills.... I've never seen anywhere except here ....on this board...where people claim they can beat the factory est MPG by some 4 to 5 miles per gallon or more? Not to be a smart @$$ but it just does not add up to realitiy.

I don't know if you are comparing apples to apples or what....or determing accurate miles covered per gallon of gas...but in any case...someone must have a line on some "magic potion or magic math"....or smoking something strong :)

nice! i like to hear is possible.. this rig is clean clean and is running 31x10.5x15 tires is all stock.. good deal! the last one i had was getting 10-13 mpg sweet buy. thanks all for input.

No disrespect intended, but this topic reminds me of this quote...

'After all, facts are facts, and although we may quote one to another with a chuckle the words of the Wise Statesman, "Lies - damn lies - and statistics,"

Mark Twain

I have a diesel, 5 spd, 33's and 3:70's and have tracked my mileage for a long time. I have averaged right around 20-21 mpg over nearly 20K miles.

Before my swap, I had the same drive train with a really good running 2f, and at best, got 15 mpg. This was on flat ground, low elevation and about 65 mph.

I think there is something goofy with the math here. In last 10 years, the energy content of fuel has gone down due to emissions regulations, but mainly due to the addition of ethanol to gas.

When ever the conversation turns to MPG, unbelievable numbers come up. Hope it's true, but doubt it!

My 2 mpg worth...

86 fj 60, 2f, webber 38, 32.5" dia. tires, 4 spd, header, no cat, big bumpers, roof rack , extra fuel and recovery gear . depending on conditions ... 8 MPG to 17 mpg. with the latter being slightly down hill and a tailwind.

For whatever reason it may be, My 84 Stock FJ60 has always pulled 13-14MPG, fully loaded or unloaded, Mountain driving or across the flat lands, always just seems to be 13-14MPG. Thats with 87 Octane and High altitude driving most of the time.

Those numbers are a threshold, I'd like to reach one day. I'm running 35's on a SUA 62 with 4.88 gears and I'm lucky to get 13-14 miles to the gallon. But I live less than a 1/2 mile away from work so a full tank will last me over a month:cheers:
