What work is required to swap an 85 4speed from an fj60 to a 1976 fj55. Thanks

Not exactly sure what the differences if any among the 4 speeds. But if it wasn't like a direct swap I'd be looking for a 5 or 6 speed - something overdrive to help.
I agree....I think they are the sane after kinda looking at em tonight. Il get a bit of work done this week and know more

8/80 transfer case switched to a split case. 60 series will not have a hand brake on the transfer case and requires special parts not imported to the US. Long wheel base 40 series 8/80 plus with a split transfer case will have the hand brake on the transfer case. 8/80 FJ40 had the hand brake on the rear axle. 60 series had the hand brake on the axle as well. It's a little wider and spring perches need to be moved. If you use a 40 series four speed top cover to keep the shifter in the correct location it needs to be from a 8/80. Otherwise the reverse light switch will not clear the split transfer case. 8/80+ switch screwed in from the top. Earlier it screwed from the back.

Can I use the old t-case with the 60 series trans? I will figure out the lights of need be but the parking brake il want for sure. Also I have a 3 speed and transfer case in an fj40 parts truck too... I may do that as well, I'm not too proud to have a 3 speed hahaha

Like living in the past said: the 2 4 speeds are not the same. You need the split t-case to go with the newer 4 speed, then different e-brake solution (newer rear axle which is wider so even more work).

What’s wrong with your existing 4 speed? 3 and 4 speed have same top gear ratio. I’d look at putting a want ad in classifieds for the right 4 speed. I don’t think the swap to the split case 4 speed is worth it.

I'm not entirely sure... was told "tranny went out and it ended up in the junkyard" trans and transfer case are on the floor in back lol. I agree on the classifieds for a 4 speed. It's probably what will happen. Dangit. I had heard the top gear was the same ratio but didn't really know. Thanks for the help. I wish the 60 series could lend more parts.......

I’d get your 4 speed looked at. These tranny’s are pretty stout (hehe). I bought a cruiser one time that had a bad tranny and it was really a bad clutch. Had a blazer with a bad tranny and it was really the t-case stuck in neutral.

I may.... im kinda close to Colorado so I can get one there if needed. I may just put the 3 speed I have in it although I want a 4 speed... totally honest I haven't even looked at the trans at all so i it could be the transfer case too I'm just being ready if I need parts.

Updated question. What if I use the tranny and transfer case out of a 60 series? That is what I should have stated actually....I have both. I appreciate all your help so far!
If you use both, that’s fine. Still have the parking brake difference where the 40 has the drum on the t-case but the 60 brake is in the rear axle. Probably driveshaft flange differences as well and shifter linkage placement I’m guessing.

Ok cool. I'd heard the e brake stuff before and that may cause me to look a bit deeper into it all but......im trying to figure out my options. Thanks for that help.

Changed the title to an H55F. I am not familiar enough with the FJ55 to know about clearance issues for the longer transmission. The FJ45 prior 1/79 the torque tube behind transfer is not an issue. On the FJ40 the newer the 40 the easier it gets to add the H55F. By the amber lights in the grill the 55 looks like it was probably made in 1969. How much the floor changed on the FJ55 I have no idea. The 55 section at the bottom of the main screen is where the best answers to adding a five speed would come from.

Thanks for the info

There is a lot of room for a longer transmission in a 55. I'm running an SM 465 tranny, to an NP 203 gear reduction box to a LandCruiser one-piece transfer case. About 33" from the (3-speed) bellhousing to the parking brake drum. Have a few spare inches before the rear runs into anything remotely important (there's a fuel vapor return line running to the charcoal canister, easily re-routed). Did have to trim the floorboard a bit and extend the tunnel. Rear driveshaft is about the same length as the front, which is kinda nice.
