Trying to get the rear window in my 1976 FJ55 working. The gear is good but the one arms is out of sync and appears to be moving faster than the other and pushing the window to one side where of course it jams up.

How do you adjust the arms so they are working in sync to raise and lower the window evenly?

Any help is greatly appreciated,
Greg

The gears also have to be timed. Do they start out with the arms equal and wind up in different time or are they always unequal?

I am unsure at this point. My Auto Body guy spent some time on it but I think he's too busy to troubleshoot this fully. When I have the 55 back in my building I will start trying to understand how you time the ams to work in sync. I'm assuming they need to be adjusted but not sure what part of the mechanism I need to adjust. The arms I assume. I need to get some photos posted up. At this point I have these photos of the the mech i recently purchased and the original mech next to it.

The arms don’t change time. If they are equal at one point and wind up unequal at another point then it is spring related. Like one spring is broke and the reg is cocking because of lack of help. It’s a basic setup it just requires it to be removed and looked at.
I would 150% swap the gear if it’s out and on a bench though. The gears are super affordable and the motor should have all the old grease removed and serviced.
Inspect the rollers on the arms clean and regrease the slides as well.

I'm going to have to get into this deeper to see what's causing the window to be cockeyed in the tailgate once you have the mechanism bolted in and rollers in the channels. Once it's all bolted up and before you even try to apply power you can easily see the window is higher on one side than the other. It's just not square. The only way I cans see to make the glass square would be to remove the gears, move one arm a little and reinstall the gears.

Yes you have to remove the entire assembly, adjust the arms carefully (those springs are very strong), and reinstall. I have done this and it is tedious but not overly difficult. I measured off the glass channel to somewhere on the tailgate assembly on each side to ensure squareness before I reinstalled the glass. IIRC it took me two or three tries to get it correct.

@WarDamnEagle is correct. You are a tooth or three out of time.
It’s very basic.
Roll the Reg down
remove the two clips from the lower guides, remove the guides,
remove the spring steel stop inside the bottom of the tailgate,
pull the glass up and support it.
Now roll the reg down some more and you maybe able to time it in the tailgate or just pull the 4 bolts and take it out and lay on a blanket on the tailgate.
You can power the reg down so far that you should be able to advance one arm and set the time on the teeth.
You can do it!!!
Put a new gear in there though… yours may work but I bet it’s cracked. Mine worked fine and was cracked.
