I have searched this site and Google with out finding what I am looking for. I am wondering if anyone has pictures of a LWB 45 with a SWB bed (type/like) and stock 45 cab. I am considering my next build.

Thanks for the help.

I think my Troopy with a 45 top is close? Never seen an lpb with a shorty bed( lengthened).

Whitey, Thanks for the pictures. I think I found pictures of your rig during my search. I am considering bobbing the rear of the frame and am curious how the longer space between the door and rear wheel well looks when divided by a cab and bed. I want the proportions to look ok.

I found pictures of an icon build that used a 6 inch cab stretch with a SWB style build. I just don't plan to stretch the cab. I may just have to play with some photo shop.

Tank,

Not sure if this is what you're hunting:

Quite a few years ago, Jonathan Ward did a resto(when he did those kinds of things) on a longbed that was originally from Mexico. The original owner had apparently ordered it built (or had it modified) that way--the story is rather foggy. So............standard cab, but shortened longbed with less overhang at the rear. I believe it was a lightened-grayish green color. To my eye the proportions looked very good, but to each his own.

If this is of interest to you, perhaps the photo(s) may show up on an older TLC4x4 website and be worthwhile searching--not an Icon product.

Are one of these what you were talking about? They only give a short description and neither one described them being built from a LWB chassis.

No, not those. Was a typical longbed, just shortened. I'll poke around and see if I can find a photo.

Okay, found it. As I said, originally ordered new in 1966 by Baja government official from a San Diego Toyota dealer and then had the dealer shorten the box prior to delivery--looks like nice surgery. Believe original TLC resto around 1998, then came back and re-offered for resale in 2011, color as mentioned; resto turned it into a soft cab top, later doors, windshield & wipers, column, dash knobs, 5-speed, power steering, etc.. I am not good at adding videos to Mud, but found the resale by Googling "tlc4x4 shortened longbed". I believe/remember there were/are earlier still photos of it from 20 years ago when it was first resto'd, but would need to do extensive searching further. You can probably freeze-frame a few side shots from the video and determine where the rear of the bed was cut and then reassembled. Hope this helps; let me know if I can help further. Good luck with your project.

If the SWB bed is moved back on the LPB frame to make room for the longer cab then my guess is there is going to have to be some frame or bed mount mods to accommodate the different mount locations both horizontally and vertically. Unless the SWB and LPB beds share those, which I doubt.

If I go this route I would be building the bed to fit from fj40 tubs, so I would use the existing bed frame mounts.

@Bear share this build with me.

That is what I am thinking but would use a swb looking bed instead of the lwb bed.

I have a ‘67 LWB 45 that’s had 7 inches chopped off the rear of the box. Although mine has been “morphed” a bit, stepping outside the “traditional” look by using a newer Chevy chassis. Nevertheless the aesthetics achieved might give you an idea, if nothing else, of the length adjustment & it’s look ?

I found these pictures on the internet but not with any build info. I think it is a stretched 40 frame. It has that big gap for the exhaust that messes with the distance and look from the cab to the rear wheel. It is kinda close. I saw for reference this build was on an auction site overseas.

Aesthetically I am not sure that I can find a way to make the distance between the cab and rear wheel on a LWB 45 chassis look right for what I want. I saw some builds with stretched cabs that would help make the proportions correct but I don't want to stretch the cab for this. I was playing with photo chop using nice SWB 45 picture of mud forum member. I hope he does not mind. I chopped a little off the back of the bed and added a few inches to the front and I like the way it turned out. The first picture is the original the second is the chopped version.

Currently I have the option to use either a SWB or LWB chassis I just need to decide which one to go with. Neither of the 45s are pure, so no matter which I choose I won't be chopping an unmolested orginal.

Sure like the look of “chopped” box on a ‘45, the stubbier the better....

What year is the one your gonna build ?

Both are 1965.

This might be wide of the mark, but it came to mind when I read your post.
This is owned by Lawrence Southward, and its a stretched 80 frame (12 inches I think), stretched cab and the tray/bed is made of two 40 series tubs.

I have looked at Lawrence's many times and watched the video of it. I really like what he did with the rig. I have considered something like this but I am back and forth as to weather I like the proportions of the stretched cab. I am also trying to decide how much work I want to take on. Customizing the cab and bed at the moment I feel is more than I want to do. He has a great build.
