Hello, I’m putting together a 1967 FJ45 (with my brother) for a client. We’ve work (basic) with some FJ40 before, but never with an FJ45. This is a whole project. So, to make the story short, we already fix a lot of things (mechanical) and now we’re working with the brakes, we didn’t try any conversion kit or something similar, because the client want the FJ exactly the same way it came for that year.

Sounds easy, but, the issue is that this FJ was in another garage and the client took it away from the person working with it because 2 years passed and the only thing the guy did was to take some of the parts and some of the client’s money.

So, when we got the FJ some parts were already dismantle, so, there’s no way for me watch one side and see if I’m doing the other one right, like on the brakes.

So far we’ve figure out a lot of things, thanks to Google and forums like this.

So far we’ve got a lot of the necessary parts, including a brake kit which comes with all the necessary parts, drums, brake shoes, etc, even the break lines.

I put together the brake shoes and the drums, but, on the kit that we got for the brake, it came with the springs, retainer pin, etc.

When I put it all together, the only thing left for me to do is to put the retainer pin(s), but I don’t know where those should be.

I’ve looked at some diagrams and it shows that there’s a small hole on the top and the bottom where the pins should go and keep the shoe in place, but, those holes doesn’t exist on the FJ model I’m working with. I’m not sure if this particular model (year) works differently. I check both sides, on the front and the back, no hole(s) there. The only hole that’s there is in the top and is for the screw to grab the junction that’s in the back.

I don’t believe it should be just like that, because the brake shoe will be loose.

I’ve included a picture of one of the sides installed so you can see what I mean. I draw 2 arrows to point where the pin should be (according to the diagrams I’ve seen), but on the other side there are no holes for the pins.

Could you give me some light on this, what am I doing wrong or what am I missing?

Thanks!

Brake shoe retaining pins and springs were not used on the 40 series trucks until 07/70 the USA, but rather, the springs were installed one on the front and one on the rear.

What is your point? "Be thankful it doesn't look as bad as this?" :D

My point was that on the '78 model of the fj45 the rear drum brakes have the retaining pins and the picture clearly shows how they are located.

Maybe not a huge help to the OP, but a little more informative than your post.

BTW, the reason I had the rear apart like that was to deal with the problem. That's just how we roll up north.

Did you miss the smiley on my post? I was just busting you.

Yes I did, my bad.

Thanks for the information guys, I just want to be sure, because I could not see any holes for the pins.

So, the shoes are just assemble like that, the only thing that will hold those in place will be the springs? Hmmm looks weird, but then, that's the way it is.

Thanks again...
