I am planning on switching over to disc brakes on my 1964 fj45. I still have the stock rims and I was told that I’ll need the newer OEM rims to make the conversion. I found a set of 1969-84 OEM wheels that I would like to purchase, but I’d like to make sure that this is what I need.
I am also wondering what conversion ih8mud members prefer and who to purchase them from? Im leaning towards Wilwood from Manafre or Mark’s Off-road kit. I will be keeping all of the original rims and parts for nostalgia and for my kids.
I would appreciate any help or recommendations members have as I have never done a brake conversion. Thank you in advance
 
The rims just need to be the welded ones. The older riveted steel 15" rims don't have the clearance for the rotors.

As for which is best........ get ready for a whole lot of opinions, I mean, information.

I did the 'Poser' conversion with Monte Carlo calipers, C10 discs and Wilwood master years ago. Still going strong today although I'm sure there are much better kits now.
 
You can also install knuckles from a newer axle that has disc brakes and use Toyota parts. Up grading the rear axle to full floater you can use front axle spindles, rotors and caliper with front wheel hubs.
 
I'm not sure he can adapt the later knuckles on to such an early frt end. He might have to swap a disc brake frt end. Wouldn't a 64 be ball and claw?

Toyota discs are a better choice, imo. And dual circuit brakes are safer.
 
also all the brake lines have 9mm? fittings and would need to be changed to 10mm?
best would be to just replace all when going to dual circuit
 
69 still had riveted rims. Single circuit brake line needs to changed to dual circuit. The bracket the clutch and brake pedals mounts is spot welded. Newer pedal mount allows for a brake booster and is removable. The 64 has coarse spline inner axles ball and claw axles which use a brass bushing to seal the knuckles for diff oil. Birfield uses an actual seal. Personally would not use a pre Birfield axle for the conversion. I bought a pre 1/79 disc brake axle for my 68 but bought a cruiser with disc brakes before installing it. I now have a few with factory disc brakes and the idea of installing disc brakes on my 68 is a distant memory.
