I am trying to get my 79 FJ40 running i have had it for about 15 years and this year i finally started to work on it to restore it. I was able to fire it up and drive it into the garage (3 months ago) when i did this i noticed gas spitting out of my fuel pump. So i just got around to replacing the fuel pump with one off of rockauto and i tried to fire it up this weekend and it won't idle. I feel like it is getting fuel because it will fire up but then just die right away that's with the choke fully out, won't do anything with choke in. It still has the original 2F engine in it. Not sure what would be going on because nothing has changed other than the fuel pump, it was able to run and idle fine with the old one even though it was dumping fuel on the ground. i haven't changed anything in or even cleaned the carb ever so maybe that's what it needs but I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

So.... update. yes there is fuel visible in the sight glass, which i never even knew was there thank you.

i played around with it a bit tonight and it fired up now but won't stay idling unless the choke is still at least half way out. so at that point it is still revving fairly high, and i noticed that fuel seemed to be coming out of the exhaust pipe. what should i try to do next? play with idle adjustment? i sprayed inside of the carb with some carb cleaner and that seemed to make it run a bit easier.

If it tries to catch but won't run without a lot of choke, start by checking the idle solenoid. This is a simple check but it is more likely to be vacuum leak. If the idle solenoid is working, look for a good sized vacuum leak.

Search on this site for how to check for both of these items.

If it has been sitting for a long time then it might need a carb rebuild or very good cleaning. Idle circuit could be blocked meaning it needs more throttle to activate other circuits to stay running.

This happened to me last month... 40 started beautifully with Choke but as I pushed the Choke in, the idle would decrease and eventually die if the choke was pushed in "too far" or off! I removed my carb, CLEANED it thoroughly / soaking in per Pin_Head's video's and rebuilt my carb after and set the carb per my FSM and reinstalled it after. I turned the car over two times for about 5 seconds and watched the fuel enter the fuel bowl. The next time, pulled the choke on and pressed the gas pedal twice and she fired right up!

Allowed it to warm up a little and adjusted the Fast Idle screw to around 690 rpm's and she runs like a top now!!! A GOOD Carb Cleaning is what it needed. Mine only sat for about 3 months as well and it caused my issues... So you could be facing the same issues it sounds like. It is the idle circuit in the carb that need to be cleaned. FOLLOW Pin_Head's video's.... Also, TAKE lots of pic's... You can delete later... But it is better to have too many than not enough to see something!

Pin_Head's Youtube 1st Video of 7:

Watch them and break out your FSM... If you do not have one - Try this:

For Sale: - 40, 50, 60, and 80 series FSM for a hell of a price.

Good luck and post up pics... Nothing better to see what is going on!

More than likely it is condensation coming out of the muffler, not fuel... You issue sounds EXACTLY like mine... See post above
