I'm thinking of taking the 327 in my '66 FJ40 to EFI - anybody know a good forum for information on HEI ignition and EFI systems for Chevys?

Peter

Cheaper and a lot easier to sell the 327 so someone who wants one and drop in a complete 5.7 TBI or TPI or even a vortec. I'd do the TBI myself.

There were no stock chips or injectors for the 327. Until the current 5.3 any way, but that's not even close to the same motor.

Holley Pro-jection. It's acomplete stand alone FI kit for your carbed powerplant. Took me about 2 weeks to install taking my sweet time, and so far it's been great. I haven't taken it on hills yet, but when I pound through snow and bump around it doesn't hiccup like the carb did. My mileage seems to be a bit worse, but I dont plan to go back.

It will set you back about 700 bucks for a new one on eGay, maybe only 400 or so for used.

Thanks for the responses.

But can't I go down to the junk yard and get most of the parts - HEI ingnition, TBI body, ECU off off a donor that will work - a lot of the kits I see are simply junk yard parts reconditioned.

And...how can it possibly be cheaper to put a 5.7 TBI in - are they that cheap? Is my 327 worth that much?

Peter

I installed a Howell TBI kit on my 350 last April, its been one of the best things I've ever done. The kit had everything you need and the eprom was burned for my aplication.

For more information look up http://www.howell-efi.com/index.html

If you decide to go this way they will ask you everything about your engine (what type heads, cam specs, intake manifold), what transmission, rear end ratio and tire size so they can burn a custom eprom.
The kit I got was $1500.00. I opted for the computer controlled distributor.

You could go to a junk yard and hunt for all the parts you need and hope they work together. I'd rather buy a kit like this and know that everything works, plus I get tech support incase anything does happen.

I also have the Holley Projection (the first version analog one). I wouldn't go back to a carb. I like the tune-ability. I have two settings. Drive and smog. The best part is I can tune it as I drive.

I think you could probably use the ecm and tbi off a 5.7 . I haven't done it but I bet you could get it to work. There is alot of info if you do a search. If you don't find all the info post up the specifics of what you need to know .

here are a few links that i have used. i am going TPI on my 350. i will have almost $1000.00 into it when i am done but it will have all new sensors, ECM and a painless wirring TPI harness # 60102

i hope all these work ? if not just google fuel injection or TBI or TPI and go from there. lots of info out there and some of the sites are just parts and some are programing etc. study first before you jump in or you may buy some stuff you dont need (trust me:rolleyes: )good luck!

Your 327 and a 5.7 TBI should be just about a push as far as cost.

TO go with an aftermarket EFI unit you're looking at $1000

To use junkyard parts, you will need to re-burn the chip. 350 injectors will not work right with a 327. They never built a 327 EFI motor for you to take the FI stuff off of. I would bet you might be able to find a 327 chip to use with a 5.7 computer and injectors in the aftermarket if you really want to stick with the 327.

Again, it would be way easier to get everything all at once. Motor, harness, ECM and injectors. It won't take too many forgotten sensors before you really start adding on costs.

The problem with teh 5.7 is it is a pollution controlled engine in California and technically I'd have to get the FJ smog'ed every two years. With the 327 I can get away with no smog requirements.

Does the EPA check the engine numbers?

When you take an car in for registration, if the engine is not original they can set year of the car, for smog purposes, to the year of engine manufacture. Whether or not they catch it is roulette.

I have an Edelbrodk Multi port Fuel injection for sale if interested...not as cheep as the TBI systems but am negotiable with the price. If interested send me a PM. I might however suggest the vortex chevy if you are interested in changing the engine. Not much for good advise towards me in selling my system I suppose.

look on ebay motors for a holley pro jection set up. its adjustable flow wise and a fairly good system. they are on there all the time for around $200.00 to about $500.00 complete and will work in closed loop or open. try to find the newer digital instead of the analog system but the analog will work fine.

and check this site too, his books are pretty good. i have the one on TPI but he does TBI too.
