See pics. Just picked up fj 40. Has lots of old dirt loose rust under. Plan was to power wash. Maybe spray with rust desolver. Wire brush with drill or dremmel. Use rust inhibitor, and coat with por15. Does this sound like a good start? I have airless sprayer could use for por15. Anyone have brands they like for rust?

hiya, I've used POR15 on both vehicles and other projects. The best bet is to really clean the underbody, get the grease off and then do the metal ready to etch any bare steel, then do a couple of coats. You'll want to clean the inside of the frame rails as best as you can with a hose & sprayer. I went into it with a steel wool on a coat hanger to scrub as best as I could with washing with full strength simple green. if you clean it really well, the pro will stick and last. My first one was done in '99 and seems to be still good. on the tough spots, i thinned the por and sprayed into rails and cross members.

you'll also want to get a good respirator, safety glasses, etc as you'll get the por on you and the smell will get to you too. you cannot clean it off your skin: you have to wear it off.

good luck!

not everyone seems to like Por15 but I used it with really good success on my FJ75 frame 6 years ago, I did a body off rebuild and had the frame bare which made it easier to clean up, prep and paint, I live coastal beach front and although my truck is garaged its still very exposed to salt the Por15 hasn't lifted anywhere or deteriorated other than the chassiscoat I put over the top has faded, I used Por15 silver and found I got better adhesion than anything I painted with Por15 black. I sanded up the frame, cleaned it with marine clean, applied Por15 metal ready, put 3 coats of Por15 silver on and a top coat of their chassiscoat black on to finish

What I did on my '66 Fj45 was powerwash, wire wheel and some sanding with a multitool to get in the hard to reach spots. Then I painted the frame with a chassis paint. I followed up with spraying the underside of the body panels and inside the frame rails with fluid film.

Much depends on what your goal is...preservation or restoration. If you decide on POR15, I've heard it's all prep work before application that will decide its success.

I'm in the process of cleaning my under carriage also. I'm new to all this stuff.
My 78fj has some thick rough white stuff that was sprayed on. I was told it was added on by the dealership or factory to prevent rust? It's a California vehicle. Do I remove it or leave it on? It seems to have done a good job over the years in most of the underside panels
