Wanted FJ40 Tire carrier

Hi all,

I posted a while ago and thought I had what I was looking for from one of the guys on here but they disappeared so not sure what happened, hopefully all is OK with them.

Anyway, I'm still looking for a spare tire carrier complete with all hinges and hooks, pre 74 type, to fit onto the "drivers side" of my FJ40. It's a 77 but I'm going to fit the older style half doors on the back. If anyone has one in good condition I'm more than interested as I'm not looking for anything rusted out or patched with bondo.

Hi,

I have a driver's side complete spare tire carrier that is in excellent condition. I have all the major parts including the hinges, latch, and hook/catch (brand new never used). The only things missing are some of the mounting bolts/screws. Let me know if you are still looking for one and I can provide you with more details and pictures.

Looks good, now the big question, what are you looking to sell it for on here?

I was going to put up a for sale ad and start it at $450. I did some research and it seems ones with a couple less parts and a little more rust have sold for $450. How close or far apart is that from what you wanted to spend?

That's quite a lot more than I've seen them, most people on here in the past are selling them complete with all of the bolts for around $110. On eBay people are asking those kind of prices so you'd probably be better posting it on there

Thank you for the response. Yeah, there is quite a price difference between here and ebay. I sold my FJ40 over ten years ago and I have the carrier left over. My FJ needed a lot of work and I originally bought the carrier when I was going to fix the car up, but I ended up selling the car before doing any bodywork. The carrier was pretty expensive when I bought it, as it was hard to find carriers in good shape.


Anyway my point is I have been out the FJ40 world for a while so I am still trying to get a sense of the parts market. Yesterday I took pics, boxed up the carrier, took it to UPS to get some shipping quotes, and then I was deciding where to list it for sale. I was thinking of listing it here, ebay, and craigslist. Then I stumbled onto your wanted add so I figured I would reach out.


You mentioned my setup not having all the bolts. Did you mean the six bolts that hold the tire bracket on, or the three bolts that hold the latch on? Is it hard to source certain bolts and that is going impact the value of the carrier to the FJ40 crowd? As I said, I am trying to catch up on the FJ40 parts market so any feedback is appreciated.

The bolts aren't a problem to buy, there's a lot of places you can get them, the hardest part to find is the latch that secures to the body of the vehicle. eBay can be really expensive. I think a $110 is a fair price for a tire carrier in good condition, I've seen two in the past on here and one on Craigslist

I'll sell you one for $110 plus shipping. Take your pick. All rust is superficial, nothing structural and would clean up just fine with a sand blaster. PM if you're interested
