I know that this is probably not that difficult, but I don't want to create any headaches where they arent needed.

I searched on the IH8MUD forum for instructions to disassemble the steering wheel but could not find one.

Any websites, pictures or instructions on the correct way to disassemble / reassemble?

I’m sure there are small differences by year, but it is pretty simple.
I made a small puller from a piece of angle iron and three bolts.
When you take the center piece of you will see a nut, and a couple of holes for the puller I think M8x1.25 but will check later.
Remove the center nut and install the puller and the wheel should pop right off.

Production date of the FJ40 as center and horn button (s) changed over the years. Center needs to be removed before pulling the steering wheel of the steering shaft.

Confirmed the bolts to pull the steering wheel at least on my 76 FJ40 at M8x1.25, and the big center bolt and nut can be an size

I am talking about disassembling the horn from the steering wheel. Is there a sequence to disassemble / reassemble them? I don't want to break / bend the inner workings of the steering wheel / horn, etc.

I think you need to pull the center pad(3 long phillips), then there are screws on the back side to remove the 3 panels that hold the horn buttons in place

Hi all, first post here as I just purchased a 1971 fj40. Nothing works :) but I love it. Fixing the horn. Trying to remove the horn cover in middle of steering wheel. Haynes Manual calls out three bolts (which I don’t see) and chat gpt is telling me to just just a screwdriver to pry off the pressure tabs. I don’t want to break anything. Anyone know if I can just pry off the button with a screwdriver driver?
