Greetings,
Need a little help. Have an early FJ40, 2/70, and need a new speedometer cable. Have found a few on e-bay but not sure they will work as they are for later year models.
One was for a 7/70 cruiser ......... will it work?
Thanks,
RBoyle

Hi all,

Well, according to the online catalog at Cruiseroutfitters.com a 02/1970 speedo cable is the same as a 07/1970 speedo cable.

I have AutoMeter gauges. I had a custom cable made for my 1970 three speed, the outfit in MN that AutoMeter recommends on their website, as the drive at the speedo is different than stock Toyota. Works great. Now I will be changing to a 1979 4 speed transmission. Can anyone tell me if the drive at the transmission is the same or different from the 3 speed?

the issue is whether or not you have a two piece cable or a one piece. At some point they went to a two piece cable but since that cable is no longer available most people will eliminate the two piece cable and just buy the one piece so they are now-a-days essentially the same.

Wondering this myself. My 40 is a production date 3/70, there is a device that was attached to the transmission with a short cable and a larger hub(?) was attached to the end and the speedo cable attached to that, although the speedo cable was loose and had been for years. I bought a new Auto meter speedo and an 8 pulse generator. Do I need the other attachment or can I eliminate it altogether.

My 3 speed had a one piece cable but the drive end at the speedometer was different requiring the new cable. AutoMeter recommends a place on their website. This company is in MN, made a professional cable. But I don't know if the transmission drive end is the same.
@David1947: I had no problem whatsoever with the one piece unit. Keep the cable oiled!

the one piece cable will fit all fj40s with the screw in ends .the 4 speed cable is longer and for some folks easier to install ,the snap in cable on the speedo end doesnt fit the screw in style speedos or vise versa.get the one piece cable and pretend the sensor isnt there if not needed
