As it sounds, what is the tool that is worth shelling out for first? What did you wish you had when it really mattered?

A good metric socket set was my first tool purchase.

multimeter

That is an open question without knowing what you have. 6 point wrenches and sockets are a must, but so is a screw driver.

exactly.

if you have nothing, then i would say combination wrenches, ratchets 6 and 12 point sockets, etc. if you have tools, then it would be more to what you dont have. i.e. some good jack stands? big torque wrench? floor jack?

Go get a 150 or 99 piece quality took kit. I forget the one I bought but it was $109.99.

He said "first tool". That would lead me to believe he has zero tools

kroil. Start spraying those rusty bolts now. :)

good quality metric sockets.

What I discovered is you can do most entry level stuff with a good basic set of metric tools ( box wrenches and sockets, breaker bar and PB Blaster or WD 40) - $100.

Unless a specifc problem arrises, then continue to add multi purpose tools for repair and diagnosis ( in no particualr order
Feeler gauges $10
good torque wrench - $50
electric multi meter - $25

then start adding tools as a job demands them
pullers, seperators etc.

I count on local loaner tool programs at Autozone, etc for some obscure tools.

Good luck

A very deep bank account.

KROIL. Wish i had this stuff from the beginning. Anti-seize comes second.
If you don't get these, then get some really nice left-handed drill bits.
then a 10mm and 12mm gear wrench.
then a multimeter, cheapo $20 one works just fine.

Sorry, I should have giving more background. I have sockets and basic hand tools (hammers, screw drivers, drills). I was more trying to get at what people didn't think they needed or didn't know about and wished they had at some point.

Good suggestions all around though.
