have you tweaked yer pump yet, WTOR style? That did make a difference with mine, just be sure you do it in small stages with the washers....I did one too many the first time - good thing for warranties! (cracked the casting!)

I'm doing a pump replacement soon....smoked the input seal on my box on Helldorado, downed 2 quarts of PS to finish the trail and start the trip back...and then ran 'er dry for over an hour. Good thing it was a whiney bugger in the first place, or I'd feel bad...lol

I outta get quite a few good pics of my install, perhaps as soon as Saturday.....currently, I run AllPro histeer arms...will be pulling the front axle including springs, doing a complete front end rebuild, and swapping to a REALLY suhweet steering setup from Luke at 4x4Labs.com. Can get pics of the current mounting and cycling, plus pics of the new setup and how it will cycle/work. Also, since one of the bonuses of Luke's behind-the-axle tie rod is a tighter turning radius (due too correct Ackerman), I'll be taking the rig to a local parking lot and doing some circles and measureing....

Now that is going to be interesting.. I want to see the difference between the arms and turning radius..

Do it locked and unlocked too why don't ya ;)

Right back at ya,

Where's my junk and what do I owe ya?

Exactly, with 33's you would probably not enjoy the real benefits of hydro assist.

I'm not stayin 33's forever..... :D
To be exact, hopefully no more than 4 months more.

I drove a 60 with stock PS with 38's, and it was hard to turn the wheel at a standstill on flat pavement, and it got me to thinking about planning hydro assist in with my PS so I don't have to do it later.

I didn't know there were any ill side effects. What are they?

4 months bailey!!! get er done son, ha ha. awesome man

hey (semi-hijack: is this to be done at clemson or at tech?)

also, just for curiosity's sake, when do most go to full hydro? (tire size, etc.)

When they no longer drive on the street...

Hydro assist can be "slow" meaning that when you are sitting at a stoplight and you try to turn it takes a second for the assist to catch up..

Here is my cheap bastard unit.

Forgive me for a bit of a back track question, but I followed the thread and I'm curious about this 'west Texas' deal to get more out of your saginaw box. Is there a way with washers (Woody you mentioned something along this line) to boost the capacity of a Saginaw box/pump?

I'm riding on 37's and had a buggard of a time trying to steer the rig going down Hell's Gate locked in front and mostly everywhere else that was flat slickrock. I'm gonna gear down with a Toybox which I assume will help keep my RPM's up at slow speed and therefore help ease steering a bit? I'd love to make due with the Saginaw and if this west texas trick is a way to do that without going Hydo, I'd love to hear more...if this question covers already well trod ground, I apologize as I'm in the dark.

I run the WTOR 6" stroke x 1.5" dia ram and honestly don't notice any difference in driveability. Hate to say it, but it worked so smoothly in Moab I forgot it was even installed....course, I never once had a single time where it wouldn't steer where I wanted it. VERY noticable once I was watching other rigs to thru the Golden Crack....Kristie was fighting her steering hard, as was TP....

On a "driver" rig, 1.5" diameter will provide slightly less boost offroad, but be more transparent on road. Matt has had issue with ram seal leaks in the past...mine had zero issues.

Pinky steering in any situation rocks :D

Scott: to answer your question, even with the tweaks I had issue on downhills prior to the Assist install. One solution I didn't try was a smaller PS pully, but I am gonna do that now anyways.

Saaweet link Woody....so you just send Matt at WTOR your existing Saginaw box and he rebuilds, taps for Hydro, and sends you back everything you need to set up the Assist? I assume you do nothing to your existing pump if your going to do the hydro-assist...eg, only modify the pump if your staying stock and trying to get more boost?

Sounds like a sweet way to go for 37's and tough trails...can I still drive it to Moab from Colorado after Hydro-Assist..7 hours on road at highway speeds?

Thanks for the links and advice,

I ran mine at autocross speeds for 90 minutes coming out of Pritchett...no problems. I would talk with Matt more tho, he's more knowledgable than me on them.

You still tweak the pump with the assist setup....volume especially is important.

I sent Matt my Scout box and $150 and it came back ported. That was 1.5 years ago, finally got around to doing the ram a month back...lol

Well since I'm a junior, don't know yet.
BTW A good wheelin buddy of mine just committed to Clemson-got a built 4runner. Hafta go wheelin this summer with us.

I will do most of this at David D's shop here in atlanta. (don't have a welder at home).

4 months is the tentative goal anyway. discs, PS, and SM420 gotta happen as well to roll/stop/steer them big rubbers.

Hydro assist can be "slow" meaning that when you are sitting at a stoplight and you try to turn it takes a second for the assist to catch up..

Thats it? I guess its that hydro assist is middle of the road between stock ps and full hydro, in that the more assist, the more "feeling" and feedback you lose.

Maybe I'm missing something, but hydro assist doesn't sound that difficult to set up.

Sorry bout the 'jack woody. :whoops:

It isn't, but when you compare it to car like steering........

It is really just nice to let people know that there is still a difference. It will be easier to turn, but there will be little differences.

Woody likes to be Jacked

jack---ass

honestly, I didn't notice an on road difference with the assist and 1.5" ram. course, my steering has always sucked...lol

1.5 is a lot different than 2" when it comes to speed. 1.5 is almost not noticable. 2" you can tell at stops..

Driving at speed you will never know the difference.

A little late on this thread but I will add my input...

I run the 1.5" x 6" ram (had option to use 8" but no need in a Hy-steer Cruiser) along with the modified (by me pump).. I drilled out the orfice to 5/32" (I think)...

I have been running it for a while now, I love it... mount high and out of the way, hoses are tucked out of harms way... Definetly worth the ~$200 I spent on the entire setup... :D

I can't seem to find the "More pics to come"...

I'm going to do this this winter. Any thoughts now that you've run it a few times?
