I agree. tried using them... warped the panel. flat panel just don't do well with butt welds, might get by with flange spot weld, but then you would have filler in a bad place.
I got some of lomass early half skins that went up to the window and worked great. good doors are important go the heritage route and save yourself a big headache

Door rust repair

Thanks for the advice to stay away from the bottom skins. I'll investigate other options.

Cheers,
John

If you already have the lower skins then use duramex to bond them across the fron the door and weld a couple of places on the bottom after you pinch the skin over. duramex is some great stuff and you will have no distortion to worry about, yes you will have a seam that will need to be sanded and filled but with such a minimal amount if done right you will never know. Pulling an entire skin can be a real pain if you don't have to. I would flange the upper portion of the door and lay the skin over it. Not the reverse as water might penetrate the seam over time. Or you can spot weld a backing strip then butt weld the panel. you still have to do small stichweld sections to prevent warpage. I've done it a few time to flat panels and it works great.

I need to replace the lower portion of the inside of my driver side door. If I don't have acces to a rivot gun or a welder how can I fab something? I have 26 gauge sheet metal which is easier to manipulate.

Actually that is not a bad price.......I'm really surprised at the price. When its all said and done.....that is a better route and cheaper at the end.

Reviving this 10 year old post. Anyone with recent experience with the bottom door patch panel kits? I need to do both driver, passenger, and both ambulance doors. Is there a better way?

Not doing it myself, but my paint/body guy is welding the 6" panels on the bottoms of my doors now. He was very complimentary of the patch panels themselves and has done hundreds of similar patch panels. No big deal. We hung the doors and verified the door gaps prior to final welding.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the patch panels and how much is your body Guy charging you to install these?

Really not sure of the original source. I actually have 2 sets of the patch panels (full doors & half doors). I bought both sets from the classifieds here on Mud. One set has a light gray primer on them - like the floor pans I bought from CCOT so I assume they are CCOT panels. The other set was unprimed, probably from Real Steel.

As to what he's charging me - I really don't know. He's doing the doors, painting the top side panels & the rear doors all together. he's been very reasonable on other parts so I didn't ask. The less I know, the less my wife can find out....;)

Yah everyone will be diff on price. I know i have a great sheet metal guy local here and he charges $40hr. And he busts his ass also when working, you dont have to be too worried about him dragging out a job.

That is a long joint to weld on a completely flat and visible panel. Very hard to butt weld without the metal warping.

Looking at the idea of replacing the front door bottoms on my 40. I picked up a cheap set of doors and the bottoms are rusted, even worse than the pics show. Everything else is good on the door glass and hardware.
Is this a good plan? Would use a profession body shop to cut/weld/ paint. Only looking for a 10 ft job. This is not a showroom queen.
Who has the best product and anyone have pics of the successful transition?
