Late last night during my final disassembly of the frame, I got in a hurry and broke the bolt on the driver side lower shock mount. I didn't have time to take apart the U -bolts and get a close look at things. I was thinking my new suspension would replace this part. I don't think it does.

So, is that mount pressed into the spring seat or welded in. Can I just buy a new stud and weld it in or do I need to buy a new seat? I tried to find a part number and a listing to buy them, but was pretty confused as to getting the right part.

Thanks.

i cut the old out and weld a grade 8 hardened bolt in .or you can get later model spring plates that have the mounts on them but require a longer shock

It is welded.

Yes, you can weld a new shock stud on the axle.

I think the rear lower shock mount is mounted to the u-bolt plate, either way, welding a new one would be fine. Be sure to make other repairs to the plate, if necessary.

Thanks guys. Once I get it off the car (tonight) I can get a better look at it. Found NOS one for $50 plus shipping, so I may go with welding on a new stud. I will add it to the list. All in all, the rig has come apart pretty easy, with minimal problems.

If I had only got up off of my butt and walked across the shop and got the torch, I would not have this problem. I should know better. Kroil oil is good, but heat is better.

Indeed it is in his application.

OP did not specify year :meh:

Lower rear shock mount moved to the u-bolt spring plate in 1977, prior to that it was on the rear of the spring perch on the axle housing.

Weld away.

My apologies for not saying a model year or posting a picture in the first post. I will try and do better :), newbie mistake.

I posted in the wanted section and a member sold me one for a very fair price that doesn't make it worth it to try and repair my broken one. Thanks guys. Great forum.

Frame is heading to powdercoater friday and sandblasting starts saturday morning!

I just broke an upper one on the rear end... 1978 fj40

anyone know what web pages have them for sale? I guess ill have to weld it on

Try Kurt (@cruiseroutfit) -cruiseroutfitters.com , @cruisermatt over at Cruisersmatts.com or John @pardion for used ubolt/spring plates. I think Mr T still sells them too.

we have what you need.. we also have replacement weld-on upper shock mounts that use the OEM bushing/nnut/cotter pinwith a nice weld-flange to make it easier under the truck but don't have them on the website.
