FJ40 4-link up front SOA in the rear (1 Viewer)

Bringing the shocks in to get charged today, then re-installing them and loading it on a trailer and off to the exhaust shop in the morning. They said they'd need it for a day or so. This will give me some time to work on the trailer, and clean the barn. Most likely I'll run it through a self-spray washer after I pick it up. It needs a good wash with all the dust and grime on it. I'll use the air hose to blow off some of the dust. A little worried about 9 months of grinding dust that will turn to rust with the littlest bit of water.
Any suggestions?

Wow what a day! Was hoping for some relaxation, finished class and headed out to the barn to load up the FJ on a trailer borrowed from a friend. The trailer was about 5-7" to narrow. So knowing my rear axle is narrower, I attempted to back it on and hoped my tires would fall in between the rails and off I go right, wrong. Wouldn't work, but here is where I noticed the front axle wasn't engaged. I went from H-2 to L-2, what's wrong, no 4WD. :bang: Then to make matters worse it starts to rain, and I have all that dust from 9 months of grinding on the FJ. :bang: Put it back in the barn, dropped the trailer off and called some other buddies and found another one. Picked it up and headed back home, it was too late to drop it off at the exhaust shop. Called Matthew about the 4x4 not engaging, after about 5 minutes and him checking his FJ40 he called back and we located the problem, the front of the transfer-case where it shifts to 4WD wasn't engaging. Added some WD40 and it engaged. I was feeling so bummed for about 4 hours prior to that. :confused: So thanks Matthew for making my day better. I will purchase a boot for it as he told me there should be one on there, I will also clean it and lube it too. Tomorrow is a new day, dropping it off in the morning at the exhaust shop. :clap: Oh I almost forgot, here is a pic of it before it goes in for brakes and exhaust. As you can see the shocks need to be tuned to get a nice even look and so I don't ride my bump stops. My brothers buggy is on the left, it is just amazing. We are going to have a lot of fun wheeling together!

Should be getting the cruiser back today. Checked on the exhaust work yesterday and it was looking tight and real nice. Have to go over my hydraulic steering as it was hard to turn. Thinking the pump is bad. Using a stock pump, duralast brand. Might need a bigger reservoir, have a cooler coming tomorrow. Going to tighten the belt again. I read something about a bigger diameter pulley can sometimes help too? And also drilling out the pressure fitting on the stock pump? Any other suggestions?

Question on a throw out bearing? I have the old manual three speed Toyota tranny mated with a 350 SBC. What throw out bearing am I looking to purchase, GM or Toyota? The bearing is squeaking really bad. Thanks for any and all help.

Yeah those are big, they are 49", looks way bigger than my 39.5". Mine was modified to go to the places he plays, the normal hardcore trail is a cake walk for him, but then there is the obstacles that you see but would never try, well he attacks them with a great success rate. We are going to Canada in 10 days and I'll post some pics up here. Mine is almost ready to wheel.
 
So I drilled out the high pressure fitting a 1/8" larger on the stock duralast power steering pump, I have a double pulley and I am going to run two belts. A few guys told me to do so if I am able. What does the dual belt do? I think I know, just curious. Also I have a ordered a Toyota throwout bearing for my FJ. Hope it is this and not the GM. I have search and I am pretty sure I am right in getting the Toyota T/O bearing. If I am wrong please let me know. :confused:
 
Received my chromoly shafts yesterday for my front Dana 60 from Rock Solid Performance out of Cedar Springs Michigan. I got both inners and outers, 35 spline, using the Dana spicer nongreasable u-joints. Because I narrowed my long side shaft the inner long shaft is 29-3/8". Putting those in today, hooking up electrical and Matthew may stop by to burn some wire. Looks like this might be ready in time! :clap:
 
looking sweet dude......but that duralast pump is almost guaranteed to bring you sorrow, get a spare and have it ready at your towrig.....and save up for a PSC, they are on sale right now with the housing/can for $180-ish

and did your brother enter a rock race in alabama earlier this year? that rig looks familiar

Thanks Mookie on the info for the pump. I kinda figured the pump being inexpensive with a lifetime warranty is mostly a cheap piece of xxxx. Im on my third one in two years. This used to drive on the road with 35s. I will get the psc in the near future.

The SRRS, yep we drove down and had fun playing/competing in the south. Were you there or do you recognize it from the videos? He has started to gather parts, he most likely will start building another one around thanksgiving. He wants it lighter, lower, and is going with more horsepower.
 
It's ready, time to play! :cheers: Not sure just how long it will last in Canada, but Morning Wood Off Road Park is a great place to :wrench: on your rig if it's not wheel-able. I'll most likely take it easy, would like to :steer: it back on the trailer under its own power. By no means is it finished, 4-link in the rear, lower gears, thinking 4:88s maybe 5:13s. But that 'll be a ways down the road, I'm broke and my rig is wheel-able so I'm going wheeling. Thanks to all who had input and helped, really appreciate it. I'll post some photos and videos of our trip. Thanks again!

ps - I may need help from the trail, hopefully not, but if I do I'll post up here
 
Didn't have time to post from camp too busy wheeling. The 40 held together just fine. Twisted a rear drive shaft in two, bent the heck out of my tie bar, too bad to fix, a buddy had one, almost exactly the same width, used that and continued on. 11:30 pm on the last night there I lost brakes and slide down the track into a rock and sheared the borrowed tie bar. Going to high steer now. Diff covers are going to be replaced as well, they are smashed in pretty well. Lasted longer, crawled more, and wheeled a lot more hours than some of the buggies and other rigs, she got a good beating there. Had to test some parts, so day one I figured was the best day to start. It surprised me, very happy and pleased with it. I did get one big dent in the passenger side hood, I'll fix that and then add some tubing for protection. Time to fix her up for the next run.

Going out to the barn to see what was the problem with the brakes and give her a good look over. Washed her really good already. Now it is time to get it ready for some winter wheeling or winter storage. I'm sure there is more damage than I know of, hopefully not.

Here is a video of some of the hardcore guys, the places they go to play are not easy places to go, reason why I built mine the way I did.
