Thought I'd pass along my most recent modification to the forum. It turned out great and can be easily replicated if others want to do the same thing. Or better yet, share what you've done and show us all a better way.
I basically took a 1970s early style spare tire carrier and stripped it down. Then I welded a steel basket together and bolted it to the spare tire carrier plate using the existing mounting holes.
Welded a couple of connection points onto my frame/basket and used a simple ratchet strap to hold a couple 20L/5G NATO fuel cans.
Reinforced the top hinge area where it bolts to the body with some 16 gauge steel plating.
All new SS hardware for corrosion resistance and grade 8 bolts for where the my frame meets the old spare tire carrier plate.
Some self etching primer and POR rust inhibiting paint and it's pretty much ready to go.
Let me know your thoughts.
