Hi, bought an FJ40 some time ago and I'm missing keys for it. I would like to take it to lock smith if he could make me new keys for it. It's in Lock position, how do i remove it from the lock barrel?

IIRC you pick to on position then there is a small hole somewhere around the body that you push a wire in to push down a tab and the core should pull out, the tab will not push down until cyl is turned to ON position OR there is a cross pin ( roll pin )in the body that needs driven out before cyl will pull. I do remember sometimes we had to drill the hole to access the lock tab, we had a jig to show where to drill the hole.

Ok, as I don't have a key then turning it to ON position is bit hard or do these turn with some other suitable "key"? Or just buy a new one?

Or is there some place where there might be key code, for example in drivers door lock? Mine has locks in drivers door and in rear ambulance door and also in fuel cap.

Thanks in advance, I'm a newbie with my FJ40 project and been stuck for a while with progress with my project.

Picking the lock isn't all that hard, so you can remove the cylinder. Making a key or setting the pins isn't all that hard either. Yea those other locks might have the code for them, might no be the one for iggy. A lot can happen in 50 years to stuff with several PO's.

your drivers side door jamb has a DATA ID Plate ....

the production date is stamped on it ....

1961 - 9/72 was the production dates of your steering column and the in-dash ignition switch set up all things 40 series BJ FJ

10/72 - 10/85
was the column mounted ignition switch & lock cylinder all things 40 series BJ FJ HJ

- you have a Red Paint GHOST mark i see on your drivers side door jamb , where your USA Spec. and some other market regions had DATA ID Plates

- i do not understand the
green paper-type media that is peeling up lower LH corner covering your dash ? is this like kitchen cabinet contact-paper type stuff ?

hummmmm .....

this is a unique-mystery ready to be unveiled i think here .......🤔

Now that Matt points out the paper...it looks like a leather covered dash...maybe that is covering up the hole on the dash for the switch.

Sorry can't help how to remove the lock barrel however based on my '73, there are a number of differences in the dash pictures (Read lots of "PO presents")
  1. Key should be on the right hand side of the column like in Matt's pictures. I'm not sure exactly when the change of location occurred in the model years. My truck was manufactured in 09/72.
  2. Knobs look like a mix of old and new.
  3. Layout of knobs does not look right. There are heater controls missing, the choke is in the wrong location and there is an extra indicator light to the left of the console to name a few.
Are you sure your truck is a '73? Not that it really matters, but there are some unique features with a '73 that might create issues when you are working on your truck. 1973 Model Reference - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/1973-model-reference.1334054/

Here is the '73 dash layout from the owners manual.

Hi, that Green-paper type media is just, as someone mentioned, kitchen type rubber mat that someone has glued on top of dash.

There are no ID plate, only red painted rust protection stamp that previous owner has get done on body at some point.

I think this might be that 09/1972 model, first registration was early 1973 so that confused me.

Based on the VIN, I'm guessing your truck was manufactured in April/May of 1972 based on the table below which makes a 1972. I suspect there is a hole in the dash where the OEM ignition switch should be located underneath the rubber mat.

i missed this earlier ,

your steering column is the 1972 and Earlier style , a Tree Style Colum Shifter circa era type

,hence you don't technically have a 1973 modle year ........ technically speaking here of course ..

your state registration physical paper TITLE would most likly say 1972 or 1973 , but that can be OFF once in a while too , the whole ....

early Jan-Dec. is a specific modle year , morphed into Sep. - Aug. was then considered a specific modle year .....

i have no clue who decided that was a good new a idea to stick with ? Except the USA-Based " Automotive Dealerships Parts & Service Council "

they had and do have BIG time Lobby Powers in DC ..... my take is and has been since T-TEN taught us , it was a new Greedy and Gimick'y way for New car dealers to create and CEMENT , the USA based / North America Traditional Holiday Season of Buying All things for all people to Give Rather then Receive , and spend all there yearly savings all at one time surrounding the little understood common understanding , that the Indians were the ones who saved all the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock from starvation and famine that 1st winter , and not the other way around ......

also , then a very popular fellow's birthday at the end of December , gave TOYOTA Dealers Nation wide . Something to Remember Sales Event that still occurs in 2024 / 2025 ......

this way buying a NEW Car / Truck before NYE really means it's NEW and not just last years Modle nobody liked that would now have a BRAS COIN with the capital letter T stamped on it and the actual Calendar Year is was formally Adopted by the nice folks who felt sorry for the ALL OEM white paint Code's only FJ40's each Dealer was obligated by the Yearly TOYOTA Dealer Chartership Agreement , that required them to have at least One single FJ40 availble top purchase at all times in the Dealers In-Stock Stocking Inventory on-hand and ready to Go !

oh ....... the mandatory 1 single white paint code only FJ40 at each dealer at all times Rule , had expressly written in BOLD Print : must be stored and displayed Inside the 3-sided all glass walls wrapped Show-Room , at all times , they could Never be left outside , overnight , or during hours of a 7 day week , the TOYOTA Dealers were Closed , like Sundays for example ......

FACT : :D
