I'm in the process of making our Lil' Adah a more road friendly and happy cruiser. She is a 1990 with stock gears and stock auto transmission and T-case. 4" lift is in and sitting on 35's you can guess the rest of the issue. Looking for advise on gearing, either re gear the diffs or the transfer case. I have no interest in installing lockers in this one FYI. If I do the diffs, what ratio would I need? This will see everything from dirt roads to an occasional highway 65-70 mph. I'm in NH so there's lots of variable terrain.
Thanks in advance.

The gear ratio tables will tell you 4:88.
Someone with practical experience might have a better idea. Perhaps 4:56? IDK. That auto tranny needs all the help it can get, so it seems prudent to regear if you must have a big lift and 35” tires.

For what it’s worth somebody with an FJ60 and 33” tires would love to take the stock 4.11 gears off your hands. They’ll be less valuable as loose gears, complete third members would fetch more, but it might be a way to help offset a little of the cost of your own regear.

Thanks for the responses, very helpful. Nobody mentioned the transfer case, so maybe not a good option? Where can I find the gear ratio table you mentioned, just google I suppose. I could sense disapproval of the big lift and 35's, I guess thats just hanging on to the impractical side. I do like the look though, but I get it. Can these gears be used in a 1970 40 series? As for the link, I guess I better make a decision sooner than later. Looks like a good deal, even with (mostly) unopened boxes!

T case gears are really for low range off-road improvements. Some of the kits have a OD in high range but that wouldn’t be helpful.

Nothing wrong with 35s, but eventually you can’t out gear the sad auto transmission. H55 swap would be nice but probably a lot more work than you want to do

i had 4:56 in mine with 33s and it felt right. it’s still a sluggish tranny though and an h55 will make a world of difference. i also did a diesel swap with it but found the 4:56 were too much and went back to 4:11. my rpm range is about right for the diesel. if you are even considering swapping to h55 do it first then regear diffs later.

This chart is based on 65 mph with no overdrive.
Yellow zone will give better mpg at highway speeds but lower torque and slower acceleration.
Ideally- aim for the green zone.

I ran 4.88's with 33's (BFG's which only actually measure 31.5" tall...) with my 3FE and at no time did I feel that I was "overgeared." It was totally fine at 70-75 on the highway and much much better in town and off road. I wouldn't go any taller than 4.88 with 35's, and would strongly consider 5.13, 5.38 etc. I did 3:1 t case gears too (strongly recommend if using off road).

The A440 is a power sponge and makes a ton of heat. (I had thermocouples on line in/out/pan for a while watching things..)
Even with 33's overdrive was only ever able to work on totally flat ground or down hill with stock 4.11 gears. The A440 makes a lot of heat when it's not locked up, and it only locks up in OD (At ~52 mph in stock form). Even with my 4.88's, 33's and a big Derale stacked plate cooler with it's own fan, I could push pan temps up to 230+.

If you intend to keep the auto, gear it for an easier life..

Thanks for the additional info! This truck will see probably only about 2000 miles a year so a swap isn't necessary I think. I've got projects all over that need attention, Fj40, LX450, my wheeling truck Oinks the 4runner.
It's looking like 4:88 gears. I was under the impression there was an underdrive that would be the equivalent of 4:88 ring and pinion. I'll get a quick pic on here so you guys can see what I have going on too.
Thank you all again

Will do. Any good suggestions? D I then bypass the radiator all together and just plug those ports?

no put it in series. there are some write ups on mud but it makes for two coolers working together. any reasonable quality tranny cooler rad can be used and i put mine just in front of the a/c condenser and ran one line in and one out
