FJ 60 help

Hi all. Joey Kolbe here- Need sonme help with my 1986/60. Started sputtering /hesitating two days ago. Filled up the tank drove 1/2 mile and it died. towed it back to my house. At first I thought -ice in the line/water in the tank. the fule filter
was full and I could blow through it. If I emptied the filter then re-connected it and cranked the engine it filled up so I ruled out the mechanical pump. I cant tell if the carb is not getting fuel though. I spray starter fluid in it and nothing happens? Electrical? Its a new coil, wires.cap ect... Could it be the igniter ??? How can I check for spark!! Any advice / help would be greatly appreciated.

Take one of the spark plugs out, insert it back in to the wire and hold it (with insulated pliers) against the block or something else that's grounded. Have somebody turn the engine over while you check for spark at the plug. It should be a white/blue hot spark.

You said it has a new coil, wires, cap, etc...Did the problem show up shortly after replacing those parts?

Or you could just give up and sell the rig to me since I'm on the market for a 60 right now!

woops right -I know how to check for a spark-Was talking about with out removing a plug. The coil,wires,cap and points were done over the summer. The truck ran great up till yesterday!!

check the points. Do you have a dwell meter?

Points & igniter? Something isn't adding up here! If it's the stock FJ60 dissy, there are no points. To check for spark, just take a plug out or use the coil wire from the center of the dissy instead. Either way only takes about a minute and a half.

Also, there's a way to emergency bypass the igniter but I forget how. it's in the Haynes manual and is described numerous times on this site.

All the plugs are sparking fine! Even with starter fluid it wont catch - just turnes?

Is it a nice hot spark? Is there fuel in the carb float bowl? Is the distributor tightened down properly (correct timing)?

Check the compression in a couple of cylinders while you have the plugs out. The FJ60's have the two-piece cam gears that have been known to fail.

About how much fuel need to be in the bowl-impossible to tell through the littlw window! and if its not firing with ether or starter fluid would this matter?

You may have a point about the starting fluid! I didn't catch that in your previous post. It should be about halfway through the window, although anywhere within that narrow center section is acceptable. You should be able to see the fuel if you clean off the glass a little bit.

Well- it was the brand new coil...lasted 4 months??

Sounds like it wasnt grounded well enough.
