Things went sorta slow this weekend...

After doing that the transfer case and rear diff lined up fine, so I moved on to the motor mounts.

I started by heading to Napa to pickup a couple motor mounts that would fit the block.

They were pretty cool and only 8-9 bucks a piece.

Then I went back to shop... with the engine in place and the trans set right... we had everything ready to make the motor mounts.

I took a 1/4 piece of plate and made scab plates for the frame. The we cut a 2x4 piece of square tubing and cut two diagonal pieces out of it. The just took a thick tubing pipe and cut them to fit.

Here is a pick of the pieces.

Welll then we just stuck them in with clamps and tacked them together. My brother Pete made it easy by doing all the crawling. We did not feel comfortable putting the car on the lift the engine etc.. hanging out of it.

Pete went ahead and welded them together while I cut some old ones off the frame and cleaned it up for welding...

This is exactly what I was looking for, an idea for replacing the bogus AA mounts with something stock GM. What is the application for the NAPA mounts you found? I haven't seen those with the mechanical catch in case the rubber fails.

New Pics

Hi All,

Well... I would like to say that enjoyed the front end work that I did over the last month. But, truth is I enjoyed about 25% of it. Knukle rebuilds almost cost me sanity. Getting all the tools and correct pieces seals bearing and preloading the bearings was a drag.

I still have a few small issues out there to work on but, all and all I am pretty sure that I consider the front end finished... The front brake kit is installed and the wheels are on. I will be looking for new hubs because the ones that I have gave me a couple problems. One hada stripped hib bolt and the other had a hub bolt broke off in it.

I am not officially 6 weeks behind schedule. Boyd Coddington would have fired me by now.As usual I want to say that i could not do any of this without all the help that I get on this forum.. Poser... Pin_head.. cdan... my64fj40... The list goes on and on. You guys are really the help that I need to get all this done. I have restored car before... Man seems that this FJ is 10 times harder (at least the frontend). I guess it is all the 4x4 stuff. I was not prepared. But, I think much of the hard part is behind me.

Here are the pics I will add commentary if I can. This is the lamest insert I have ever written because it took so long and many times I was to busy to take pictures.. If you have any questions please let me know.

No I have not got the drive shafts yet that will probably be in December if I am lucky.


Here are the pics of how I got the front bearing races and seals out... I figure anyone can take the knuckles and axles out..

Next I put the Steering Knuckle Centering guage in and torqued it to 5 pounds on the spring scale.

At first I forgot to put the line marking pieces in the axle shaft whole so I had to redo much of the work of getting the torque set again.. No big deal.
If you don't like redoing things a couple times don't get into the knuckles.

Taking the measurements is easy as long as you have a huge micrometer... I had to go borough one from a friend who rebuild engines.

Suprise! I had the wrong Steer tool... They don't sell the one I needed anymore so I had to have a new piece made for it.. Here are the measurements.

Is it just me or are those knuckles installed wrong? Aren't the calipers supposed to be behind the steering arm and not in front of it?

I got my new motor in last week. I put it in last week. Now I am in the process of changing the the heads to a later model version. So that I can use the brackets and intake for the TBI injection.

Here is the old donor for brackets and TBI.

I thought some of you would be interested to see the body dolly I made to move the body around while I am working on things... In my limited space.

Yes wheels are gone...

The wheel are gone with replacements of steel wheels and 10.5 tires.

Where has Jack been...

Hi Everyone,

I am back online and trying to get things together.

My cruiser has been on gold for the last few weeks because I was in a car wreck... My beloved Mits Montero was totaled. I made it through it just fine.

Since I have been car shopping and everything else I have really been strapped for cash and time. If your wondering I bought a Honda Civic.. Not exactly sexy but, 40 mile per gallon gets me down the road.

Basically I have done nothing but, I did go buy the correct Flexplate for my motor and trans combo. I thought that you guys woudl be interested in noting that is it different.

Above is the correct for the 700r4 trans and the chevy crate motor I bought.
