OK so anybody with an early model 100 series, tundara or LX UZ engine knows their only real weakness is the factory manifolds which almost are 100% guaranteed to crack st some point and give you the darn annoying ticking noise.

This was my quick fix and it worked a treat. Ticking noise gone and it should last quite a while until i eventually replace out with headers and upgraded exhaust. Most people know this is a hard job in terms of vehicle access and outright expensive if you get a shop to do it for you.

Snake oil does work from time to time but before the naysayers jump on im under no illusion that it probably wont last forever but i dont need it to, i just cant stand the ticking! :)

What qualifies as an early model? This is the first time I've heard about this problem. I have a 2001 LX.

I don't know the cutoff, I'd at least say 98-02. They literally all have this same exact problem. Most people it ticks when the manifold is cold but goes away with temp. Some just always have it. I have it in my 2000.

Interesting. Ever since it got cold (like 25-35 degrees out) on the first start in the morning I hear a very slight tapping sound that goes away within the first minute or so. Assumed it was a lazy lifter or something and I hardly consider it a problem, but this thread piqued my interest. I can't find a youtube video of the noise it makes though.

Can almost guarantee that's it.

I just found this thread with the videos. Mine doesn't sound anywhere near as bad as that though, it's pretty faint. I'll probably just wait until it gets worse before I start caring, since most threads just say the noise is the only real problem until it gets bad :)

Exhaust Manifold Leak

Its a ticking noise not tapping. tapping would suggest metal so you probably do have a lazy lifter, best way to check is get out of the car and listen in the wheel wells, it will be very obvious. If it doesnt do it at idle, get someone to open up the throttle while you listen to both manifolds

Yes, "quick temporary fix". Let us know how that works out in the new year!

Faint ticking can be normal injector noise, can be fuel pulsation damper, lifter noise (less likely) or even fuel pressure regulator- but noise will be constant cold or warm.

Ex.manifold leak is pretty unmistakable cold.

I thought the cracked manifold issues were only on the 06+ VVTi models, since it has the secondary air injection. Am I wrong here?

I believe it stopped around 03 or 04. I had an 02 that ticked pretty bad when cold but my 06 sounds great!
Ah darn. I dunno where I read that then. Would've loved to have picked up an '06-'07. Oh well. At least I don't have to worry about the secondary air injection system taking a dump on me.

Really? I can can tell if any early 00's toyota has the 4.7, it's ticking away!

I'm so doing this. Mine is getting very annoying and It already surpassed the "just a ticking in the mornings".
Santa is not bringing any DT headers for me either. =(

More than happy to, its a win win, $20 bucks of concrete magic which i now know of cars that have been running it for years without an issue. If it fails are say 6 months or even less no stress its not as if it required any real labour or cost. Not everyone can afford to just flick a couple of grand out of their pockets to upgrade exhaust components :)

In case anyone is interested, there is a group buy for the DT headers currently on FB.

Just an FYI the 2UZFE engine doesn’t have lifters. As stated by @2001LC in another thread, “2UZFE have overhead cams riding directly on bucket over valves.” Honestly it’s news to me too as I never knew that. I guess ya learn something new everyday!

My 02 does this...goes away after a few minutes too. I thought of doing this but wasn’t sure it would be worth the time...maybe I’ll give it a shot after the new year and while I got the air box off throw some new plugs in.

Just do it, took less than an hour and the ticking can drive you nuts if there is anything for the noise to echo off

IMHO, Exhaust leak that goes away after warm up is not critical to fix. Those that are so bad they tick all the time, should be repaired.

They're fairly easy to recognize:
Put ear to fender-well, it's a pretty loud tick.
Have someone drive off as you stand at curb. You'll hear it clearly as tick rate increases with RPM. It's kind of a popping sound.
With smoke test or soap bubble test it can be isolate.

I've seen some sort of liquid (glue) patch used on hanger bracket that has ripped out of exhaust pipe. It seem to work very well.

Be interest to see if it works on manifold. I'd think prep-work would be key to good adhesion.

FWIW: Here's pictures of buckets sitting on valves under cam(s)

They can get loud if gap get to wide.

Shims come in different sizes to adjust gap.
