I decided to start this thread to document my personal FJ40 journey..so here's the 'skinny'. Im 40, happily married to a retired Navy corpsman with a daughter. I have NO real mechanical experience. My only on hand experience for what Im undertaking is driving POS cars for many many years. I know when a car sounds right, and I know when it sounds wrong..especially if I turn the radio down! As a female, you guys have got to know, I may not necessarily come to a conclusion the same way you do..but Ive got common sense and Im hard headed as hell.

Why do I want an FJ40? Metaphorically - I understand them. They bulky in all the right places, theyre tough and yet beautiful they take a licking and keep on going. Theyre stubborn and faithful. Theyre cranky on cold mornings.. In other words...they remind me..of me!

Im an old school tomboy, grew up fishing and hunting. I own my own weapons and I take pride in being self sufficient. So an FJ40 seems a reasonable choice..I learn anything easily and Im excellent at figuring things out. I need a hobby .. why not an FJ40? Jeeps are a dime a dozen. There's just something about FJs.

So as a woman, with no true experience - it might seem daunting to knowingly sign up for such an endeavor.

Join me. Ask questions. Share my search for MY FJ40 as I learn - and if youre a woman and interested - maybe what I learn along the way will help you. And if youre a man with a wife that doesnt get your FJ obssession ...well maybe Ill be able to help sway her opinion!

Ive always admired the FJ40 in particular..there arent too many around the coast of NC - but I saw a shiny red one with a white hardtop sitting in Swansboro and everytime I drove by, I could almost hear her telling me to pull over.

By the time I convinced myself to stop and look she was gone. Who knows? Up close she mightve been a bondo buggy with a crappy paint job..but in my mind..this old FJ was perfect.

So I started reading. Skulking around this forum..asking my well versed in mechanical knowledge husband random questions..."What do you think of those old landcruisers?"

Poor guy, he never saw it coming.

I finally joined this forum - (paid membership) started asking questions.. and found out how much in love with LC's you all are.

Here's where Im at. Im too much of a noob to do a complete restoration. The first FJ40 we looked at, my husband pointed out the almost completely crushed crossmembers on the frame. (Once you see really bad, you can recognize 'good') When the huz showed this to me, I immediately referenced this forum - and found what the frame SHOULD look like.

Ive learned from this that a solid frame is non negotiable. We cannot weld at my house.

I do not have a garage. So doing a complete rebuild of an FJ40 is out of the question.

A shiny paintjob is not even ON my list. A completely restored FJ40 is out of my price range, and Id be afraid of ever parking it anywhere and getting door dinged.
I want an FJ or BJ40 series that I can throw my gear in and go to the range.
I want an FJ40 that I can teach my daughter to drive stick in..just like I did...so when she gets older, she can drive just about anything..and fix it too.
I want an FJ40 that we can throw our dogs in and go camping or to put our tiny little boat in water.

The 2nd FJ40 I went to see was a complete rust ridden body..One of the ONSC guys actually met up with us to go see it. The frame looked pretty good? But again, way outside of what Id be capable of handling.

I spend a lot of my time looking for an FJ40, reading about them and discussing what Ive read, watched on youtube and discussed with mudders - with my poor patient husband. Luckily he loves talking about engines..and for once he gets to share his knowledge without me rolling my eyes. ;)

Ive been researching why I would or would not want to do a power steering conversion on an older 40 (decided I would not, but have since decided this possibility needs further research as well)

Determining whether or not I would want a disc brake conversion (I would, and we'd do it ourselves)

Do I want to buy an FJ40 with a non toyota engine in it? (At original post, I thought no - but having seen some well done, a 2F is not a necessity- Id just prefer it)

Looking at other guys builds, what they encountered because it all factors in and plays a roll for me in my search..Finally read all the FAQs..well not ALL of them..

So this is probably the most Ill ever write in one sitting..Sorry if its too much. . Thats what happens when you let THIS woman get ta' talking..Help me find my first FJ40!

Dang,. My wife and three daughters will not get near my toys.. And they think the FJ40 looks too mean...

I spent 8 years in the Corps.. I never met any Waves or BAMS that were willing to turn wrenches....LOl

Good luck in your search... took me 3 years to track down a suitable basket case.. But i prefer them that way?

Depends..I don't want to overspend on the initial purchase...that way I can budget more for constant tinkering, repairs and upkeep...$7k at the absolute most..its a case by case basis..whatcha got??

What's your price range?

I'm confused....

First of all, price range on females or vehicles.

Also, this title seems confusing.

I'm male, have always been male, will always continue to be male, and am only interested in full time and all time females.

What is a "first time female"?

As far as vehicles, the only solid vehicles you might find hide in desert areas like Saudi Arabia, with some small other supplies in Arizona, New Mexico, etc... All of these will need paint at the very least.

Sometimes toys are about being realistic. If you have no space, no garage, and no skills, a 30-50 year old car might be a challenge unless you buy one that is already restored. Then upkeep becomes a major issue.

I don't mean to be a downer. Just these toys cost tens of thousands by the time you get done. Are you and your family ready for this plunge on top of home mortgage and college costs that are all in your future?

Only YOU can answer.

Just my $.02

Best,

T

 Good point..
First time FJ purchase by this particular female...I tend to be a bit wordy in writing..

About money .. well we arent throwing piles of money into the bonfire...nor is my kid going to live off pork and beans because I needed a new clutch :D..I get what you mean and I appreciate the points..Ive worked hard all my life - now I have the time, the patience and pigheadedness to do this.

As far as garage goes...that particular project, my huz volunteered for - he has figured out an FJ is coming - and it gives him an excuse to buy tools ha ha.

Sounds like you'll have fun. Working on any car is a s***load of work though, just be sure to keep that in mind.

rust is something that you will have to address with east coast trucks.
Join your local cruiser club and they'll steer you in the right direction.
Expand your search to Virginia. Plenty of 40s still rolling around under stock power. I might even know a few people trying to sell some.

Boooo!

I didn't know we were being graded on our titles and sentence structure. Are the moderators aware of this change? I'm sure if I skulked around your posts I'd find some less than succinct titles and poor "development of your main idea".

I don't mean to be a downer. But I just am...
Fixed it for ya.

To the OP: Good luck with your search. Be patient, use Craigslist, and the classified section on 'Mud and you'll likely turn up the rig that is right for you. Learn all you can about them before dropping the coin.
I bought mine for $1500 in 1997 and after changing the belts, H2O pump and fixing the leaky crank shaft gear cover I drove it from Newport to Philly over and over again (5 hrs each way) loving EVERY minute of it. I eventually did a body-off resto, because the body was rough, but that was after 4 years of driving it everywhere.
If I could have afforded it, I would have bought one with less rust, but I was more concerned about a reliable drivetrain.
So, I think for $6k, you can find a rig that won't be perfect, but won't be a basket case either.
Good Luck and let us know how it goes!
P.S. There are plenty of asshats around, just like in the Navy, but, just like in the Navy, you block 'em out and press on.

I wouldnt worry about what engine it has in it, I'd go for the best body you could find and make sure the chassic is serviceable. Work with your hus and replace all the steering joints and put on good tyres that suit your purpose. get your brakes 100% and keep maintaining them. It sounds like he can tinker with the motor and keep it going.
Dont spend big bucks on it, it doesnt have to be a show piece.
Throw your camping gear in it, hook up your boat and just enjoy it....

Cheers.. Gaz

My wife is much like you....she learned how to drive a clutch in my FJ40 some 28 years ago. She can't wait until we have our current build done.

My advice (and I wish I knew it when I bought my current FJ) is to wait and find one that someone else has already sunk a lot of time and money into. Cruise the classifieds here and wait for one with a build page on this forum....there will be no surprises that way.

Save a little more money and I think that if you can get up $9 or 10K....you will find the FJ40 of your dreams.

Good luck!

Doc

Alot of people on this site will tell you that a'40 is a bottomless money pit. Maybe I just got lucky but I bought mine for $7,000 back in '96 (I know that was a long time ago) and thought I paid way too much for it. The P.O. had the 2F engine rebuilt, new U joints, rebuilt steering knuckles, tranfere case and transmission "gone through" and new drum brakes. The truck looked really good.....from across the street; but had rust issues. I have since slowed the rust, sprayed on a new paint job,and have put nearly 75,000 miles on it. Of course I've put on new tires a few times, batteries, brakes, and typical wear items but no internal mechanical failues. I drive this thing nearly everday and it's been on countless hunting, camping and moderate wheeling trips and I still get giddy everytime I drive it. Be patient and buy a good runner where everything works. A lot of the fun is customizing your truck to suit your needs. Sounds like you have a great attitude, and welcome to MUD!

Thanks to you all for the feedback - Ive never been easily swayed once Ive made up my mind.

TOBASH, looking at your avitrar photo, reading your rant, and looking at your tag line, I'd be very worried about your "emotional well being" if I were you...

Gaz.. :D

anybody want to look over some pics a guy sent me? let me know and Ill email 'em to you.

I don't have anything for sale at the moment, but I'll keep an eye open for you. We actually see some pretty nice trucks here in Washington and the PNW for less than $10k. The west coast in general has trucks in better condition than back east. Of course, you'd have to factor in shipping or fly out and drive one home. But spending a little more up-front might save you money in the long run. I'll drop you a pm if I see something nice. :)

Post 'em up on a photo sharing site and link them here. You'll get plenty of feedback.

And stop calling it an FJ. It's an FJ40 or a '40. "FJ" is unspecific and too often used to refer to FJ cruisers.
