First long distance run on BFG MTs tomorrow.... What psi should I run them at? (1 Viewer)

I've been running MTs for years on my FJ60. My long distance number is 40 psi. I don't actually like BFG MTs but at 40 spi on the street, they last a really long time.

fjfar80, I wasn't singling you out. CDan started it, and I added my $.02 as well. I get a little bent when people start preaching about their version of safe driving, and while I agree that doing 90+ in a lifted truck with oversized tires ain't the brightest thing to do, the OP already knows that or will certainly feel it when he gets up to speed. If he doesn't, no amount of advice is going to make him realize it. Notice, though, I still backed you (and others) up on the safety factor.

Gotmud, I drive my wife's stock 80 with stock-size BFG AT's like a Porche. :D It actually handles pretty damn well, and I wouldn't hesitate to run it over 90. The AT's were a huge imprevement in handling over the Michelin stockers, probably because they have a stiffer sidewall and higher pressure. My truck, on the other hand, makes me nervous over 75.

Any idiot driver doing 90+ in anything, affects a lot more than just their own safety. They affect everyone else on the road around them, including us and our families. How many people have been killed in chain car wrecks on freeways, when high rollers lose control in front of them? A lot.

No worries guys...let us know how you do like the tires though...I am thinking of getting the MTs and selling the ATs.

My first reaction to the OP was that this must be a joke.

Try a full-panic stop from even 30mph on those MTs. I did once, not by choice, and nearly soiled myself. And that was on dry pavement. You just don't have that much rubber in contact with the road. And the contact you do have is from tall, flexy lugs.

Plus at 90mph you'll have those driveshafts, U-joints, pinions, etc. spinning like turbines and your tranny will be feeling it too.

Please don't be a public menace. Don't make me put Sheriff John Bunnell onto you. ;p

Well, we got in around 6am this morning (straight run)

Would've been sooner if it hadn't been for a 2.5 hour traffic jam in Delaware :bang:

Bumped the pressure up to 40psi and checked the temps at the center and outer treads at every fill up (didn't have any chalk on me)...

Temps stayed consistent across the entire width, but I wouldn't put that much faith into my old temp gauge (it's not a fancy infrared deal or anything)...

She definitely handles better with more pressure and the only noticable drawback was harsher bumpsteer, but that was expected...

No bad vibes and the noise level pretty much stayed the same (louder than my previous Toyos, not terribly brutal)

I won't get into the whole argument of speed, but I will say I averaged a little over 80 (with a few quick passes over 90+) and was still getting flashed to pass by truckers

One idiot was riding my ass in the slow lane and kept flashing his lights (there was nowhere for me to go as I had someone in front of me), so I flashed my rears and chuckled when saw him lock up his brakes in the mirror

Slowed down and when he pulled up beside me honking his dinky horns, I blasted the big guns on the rack and I could tell he nearly $h!t himself

yeah, I'm sick like that :flipoff2:

It's Ruth Ann's fault

BS-the state isn't that big! Oh...I forgot, the gov't has a budget problem! The Governor has agents at the border giving everyone the shake down.

Next time, just drive throught the median and say screw this!!!:grinpimp:

I know, it's usually a 25 minute drive through there, but for whatever reason they closed al lanes except one, which brought everything to a standstill :bang:

Lucklily I had my DVD player or I would've fell asleep at the wheel just sitting there
