Yacht/ Marine / RV hatches are another cheap option if you don't need to store long stuff.
Just here to add my 2 cents as an owner of a handful of Delta things. Their parts are stout as heck and over-engineered if anything. I’ve never seen a more solidly built “mass produced” bumper for example. It’s definitely not usually a case of need to pick Delta over alternatives but if you’re looking for top of the line, easy to install and last-forever equipment then you’re going to have to pay for it.

For this item in particular my kids and their friends sit on the tailgate all the time to eat lunch on the trails so I want something that isn’t going to flex or eventually break. The thickness of the material and the added support bracket make it the best option for me and while I’m not enthused about paying that much I can justify it. Also appreciate they are adding the option of keeping carpet over the surface.

It’s pricey for sure though so totally understandable why others might look elsewhere.

Haven't ordered mine yet, but I think those balking at price might have forgotten that the original Backbay Customs version was already around $600 (with lower gauge material). This panel is definitely the best available in terms of finish and utility.

IMO the biggest relief is now that DeltaVS holds the designs, you don't have to worry that it will get discontinued again before you're able to grab one.

Exactly. 600$ in the pre-Covid days even. Many material costs have doubled (some even more) since then.

I have the last run of the back bay customs, your correct it was almost $600.

I have chosen Delta for everything on my 80, couldn't be happier and I have no doubt the tailgate tweaks are spot on.

Cheers :flipoff2:

I see a non delta product on your roof!!!
Hahaha, good eye, good eye :hillbilly:

I do have occasional experience feelings of guilt not having the Delta roof rack. However, I do love the Bowfin for is classic clean simple lines, streamlined look and it was a gift from my wife.

I do occasionally consider going full @Delta VS purest being the huge fanboy I am, I'll keep praying to the Land Cruiser gods saying all my hail Marys and our fathers hoping for forgiveness and peace within 😂🍻

Cheers :flipoff2:

@Delta VS what happens when something is spilled on this when it's closed or upper hatch closed and a heavy rain? Does the liquid drain out or the seals keep the interior dry or soak what is inside?
for any liquid to drain out you would need a hole in the tailgate that would be open to outside atmosphere, which we certainly wouldn't recommend. if you spill your 64oz big gulp of mt dew on the tailgate, you will have a mess to clean up no matter what. the lid sits on felt strips that are adhered to aluminum below (the instructions are on the product page so you can see how it all goes together), so no waterproof seal. a waterproof seal would likely end up with some SMELLY recovery gear and likely mold over time, so also would NOT recommend that.

How does that setup hold up when crawling in and out or rolling/ dragging heavy items over the center? That would be my biggest concern. Someone here did a split door DIY that leaves the meat in the center of the tailgate. I like this but would be my only hang-up.
I know this is an old post but I am finally (13 years!) getting to the stage when I need to cut mine out. I agree about leaving the centre in, it is sooooo easy to open my RTT when standing on the tailgate.

Regards

Dave.

Ours is stronger than OEM sheetmetal with the center left in for sure. No comparison.

so has anyone who has one of these come up with a pad/carpet solution? I'm thinking a custom Seadek foam panel or the like would be slick.

I don't dare ask @Delta VS for fear of public ridicule 🤣
Mine is from the last batch of back bay customs and it came raptor lined, for my use I like the durable surface and wouldn't put carpet on it.

The raptor lining has texture to it and it's been great.

Raw aluminum is cool too, durable. To each their own, would probably be pretty easy to carpet with like marine carpet with spray glue and a very sharp razor knife.

If you can imagine it...... it can be done.

That's the only thing preventing me from purchasing one of these kits. When the tailgate bakes in the sun, the bare metal is a bitch against any part of your body.

we had carpet cut for testing but haven't found a good solution for adhering it. know of some folks who had them powder coated with good results, painted with steel it with good results, etc.

with the high thermal conductivity of aluminum, your skin/flesh will cool it off pretty quick (jkjkjkjk)

Thanks for chiming in. I agree adhesion would be iffy. I'm curious how that SeaDek stuff would hold up. It's badass on boats and coolers, not sure it'd like being on a tailgate...but they do use it on RV steps and such too. I'll do some more digging...
