Here are some pics 277000 miles orginal engine, tranny is auto and changed 5 years ago but leaking. Just had ac completly redone now ice cold. bought 3 weeks ago long way to go and big dreams. Congrats, same year as mine! GL on the birfs, I haven't had to tackle that yet. Make sure to get the Marlin Crawler inner seals. There are several vendors that have kits for them. Check out Man-a-Fre, JT Outfitters, and Cool Cruisers of Texas.

Go ahead and install a transmission cooler, flush the transmission, and the normal tune-up stuff. Just take care of the tranny! I am getting ready to install a gauge to watch mine.
 
where can you get a tranny cooler I put the lucas tranny treatment in it for noe going to have someone drop it and replace some or all the seals to stop the leak. but lucas seems to have stopped it havent had much time to drive it.
 
Nice 62. I just did the birfs on my 62 and learned a ton while I was doing them. My first piece of advice would be to have the FSM and at least one or two write-ups on how to do them. Get a big bucket and tons of degreaser, paper towels, rags and rubber gloves(the good thick ones). Read the posts and write-ups a couple of times before you start, it will help familiarize you with the process before you start. Also, make sure that you have all of the appropriate tools, parts and greases/oils before you get going. I also bought a fish scale to check the moving parts( you will find it mentioned in your research) and that was a pretty easy way to be spot on-ish. Take your time and enjoy the 20 year old junk that comes off as you tear into it. If you run across any specific questions feel free to drop me a pm and I will try to be of assistance. Anyway, im sure I forgot some stuff but the board will pick up my slack no doubt. Here are a couple of posts that I used to do mine. Oh yeah, the brass drift and a good torque wrench are your friends. What did it cost you to get your AC serviced? Mine is no worky.

You can get a transmission cooler just about anywhere. I would recommend something like a B&M Super cooler. Get the biggest size that will fit. I got mine at an auto parts store. Go for the bar and fin type, not the tube type.

First of all.....go hogs.

Secondly, nice looking truck. Think about an ome spring setup, dual batteries (stereo) and a 60 series front with a lighting upgrade. Had my 62 out camping at the pickathon this weekend and always remember why I like it so much.

First off, nice 62, just like mine, except for tires and the mud flaps.

I've got a question for people with 62's. I want to get a lift on mine probably 4 or 5 inches. Where would be a good place to find one. I have been looking for quite a while now and cannot find one. :bang:

Nice 62, same year as mine, allthought mine has a lot of Chevy parts in it. Wouldnt mind having a stocker again. The birfs are easy, just messy. Go but a bunch of spray on de-greaser, go to your local car wash spray the whole front end down then go to town with the high pressure soap wand. Really get in there and get as much of that crap off as possible. If the grease is reallllly bad, put a oiece of cardboad down before hand, get a pair of grungy coveralls and a aet of rubber gloves and scrape off as much as possible before the car wash. Fold up the carboard or palstic or whatever and go from there. Once you washed it all, wash it again from as many different angles as possible. I like to keep my rig clean so when I work on it I dont get filthy.

Lift? I used 63" Chevy springs on the rear of mine, (Spring over which is a ton of lift). You could do spring under with an add a leaf and a longer shackle, I used the 62s rear springs on the front....why? The springs are longer, rides like luxury car and articulates better.

X2! FrontRange! Kurt will definitely hook you up with the goods to do a decent birf job! To completely rebuild the birfs (bearings, cage, etc.) you can also get in touch with Cruiser Dan. Just search for his name here on the boards. He gets you the genuine Toyota stuff. To do the birf job just check the FAQ. I did mine, both sides, in about 3 hours.

You can check with CCOT for their lift or try Alcan. Personally if you're looking for 4-5 inches of lift go SOA. You'll lose street-ablity but have a great off-road setup.

Well iam glad there is a community like this that enjoys the older finer things in life. I will tackle one thing at a time as the funds and money will dictate it. Going to do the tranny flush tomorrow and rear axle fluid change. Going with the synthetic.
 
Read, read, read. Tons of info to read hear if you learn to use the advanced search. For flushing the transmission DON'T do a powerflush (i.e. transmission shop), you can do a passive flush that uses the transmissions pump to cycle the fluid, and won't damage anything. Search "A440F" (the tranny in the 62) "+flush" and see what you get.

Check the tension on the kickdown cable while you are giving the tranny some attention. Makes a big difference in how the beast behaves.

x2 or 3 on the FSM, not cheap, but will pay for itself the first time you service your truck.
 
Napa sells Valvoline Synthetic ATF, it is much cheaper than Mobil 1 (I'm sure it is 99% as good). It is what I went with. Go with regular old dino juice for the rear axle though...

To adjust the kickdown cable follow the FSM! It's a quick cheap and easy fix for a sluggish trans. IIRC you need only 1mm slack in the cable after you adjust the stop nut.

Nice Looking 62

I too have an 88' - lovin it! I just did a knuckle rebuild a couple of weeks ago. It took me probably 12 hours total, but that was a couple of hours at a time in the evenings after work. the Morgan rebuild in the FAQ section of this forum was very helpful as was the FSM - gotta have that FSM! x2 on the torque wrench, brass drift, fish scale and TONS of heavy duty paper towels! Knuckles were my first big project on my 62, and it was a bit overwhelming at first, but I think I could get it done in an afternoon now. well worth it too - mine drives sweet!
