I have had a vibration for a couple of weeks and couldn't figure it out until now. It only vibrates in drive or reverse when you are stopped with your foot on the brake, Put in in Park or Nuetral and it didn't make a sound. The two times before when I had someone to help (Keep in drive while I look) it didn't make a sound.

Pulled into the garage today and it was making the sound, so I put it in reverse and put on the emeregency brake and very carefully climbed under.

Determined that the sound was coming from the Cat. When I pushed on the Front CAT with a Bar, the noise stopped.

Talked to Christo (Thanks Christo) and he said sometimes the outer shield loosens based on rust. He suggested getting a huge hose clamp and tightening it down. I'm going to the Hardware store to get a clamp and I'll let you know how it works.

Curious if anybody else had this issue.

Yep, my 97 did this, and I also used a hose clamp.

Christo told me its about $1500 to replace both Cats. Hose clamp is much cheaper.

I tried two hose clamps around the biggest part, center of each Cat. Noise seems to be reduced, byt still there. Should I put clamps around where the Cat meets the pipe?

Sitting in my garage, the CAT/Exhaust is vibrating.

Ken, is the replacement cost Christo mentioned just thr cost of the cats or does that price include installation?

Thanks

Vince

This turns out isn't my problem, so the title is wrong. The CATs vib normally some and it was getting coupled into my slider making a bigger (attenuated) vib/rattle.

I started a new thread on that and so far it looks like its a mechanical air gap between the slider and the Frame.

My rig has had that vibration since I rebuilt the motor. I pulled the down pipe from the exhaust manifold to the cat, and the sound is in that area. I broke the bolt holding the bellhousing/exhaust clamp mount to the pipe, and I figured the pipe was vibrating. I finally replaced the bolt, and it helped some initially. Now it's back :(. I'll check out the cats.

edit:
The vibration is gone after putting a hose clamp on the outer pipe heat shield.

Where is the outer shield ?

Climbing under with vehicle running, in gear, and being held by ebrake to investigate a vibration makes me nervous for your well being.

Perhaps worth checking motor/tranny mounts? Engine/drivetrain could be shifting (and allowing contact) when put in gear with brakes applied to wheels.

Good luck. Don't get squished.

Its what you see on the CAT that has holes. You oput the clamp around that. Turned out not to be my problem, but was others.

Ah yes, I know what you're talking about now - thank you. I think that is the problem.

How about adjusting the idle speed and mixture standing in front of the rig with it in gear? SOP on my '72 GMC truck.

Whats a cat?

Think diesel.

Im catless in Seattle.

Does the mafia make cats? The price seems ridiculously high for some dinky unit.

I agree that the prices are high, especially for OEM. It is my understanding that the high costs are principally because of the precious metals used in the construction. Seems they have to use platinum, rhodium, and cerium for removal of noxious chemicals.

Here is some more information from Subaru.
