So just picked up a 2018 TLC, and I have a few questions that neither the dealer or Toyota Customer Care has been able to answer yet.

First off...just to clarify. I have had a few and been around a few more Toyota SUVs and Trucks. I feel pretty familiar with them.

Ok...so on the windows sticker it reads: All Row Roll-Sensing Side Curtain Airbags (RSCA) w/Cutoff Switch.

I am aware of this switch and its purpose from my 100 TLC and FJ. I can not find it anywhere on the 2018 TLC. Am I going crazy or blind? I have yet to find it in the owners manual, although I have not finish reading the whole thing.

Also....what is the small horizontal opening to the right of the steering wheel? Its too small for a phone....idk. /Shrug.

Sorry for being a 200 newb. Thanks for your time.

(RSCA) w/Cutoff Switch
I think that switch is in the bottom left side below the steering wheel and displayed in the screen.
The slot is for a "proximity card" type garage opening things (that some of us are still using!)
There is another slot like that in the visor.

I have looked at all the buttons on both sides of the steering wheel. The dealer could not find it either. Also I have a case open with Toyota, it has been a week and they do not have an answer yet.

I am not familiar with "proximity cards" lol. I will have to look into that.

Located left of the steering wheel.

EDIT:
So it appears that on 2018+ the switch has been removed. I confirmed both in FSM and the Manual. Odd.

So I am not going crazy then? So is there even a switch then on the 2018? Just was confused, because it says there is on per the Window sticker.

I think they automatically switch back on above a certain speed. Wonder why they changed it.

I had a 4th gen 4R where I wish I had the bags turned off. Ask me how I learned the hard way :hillbilly:

Thanks for the updates. Still waiting on a answer from Toyota.

The other thing I noticed that seems weird from Toyota. Every time I get in or out of the truck, it says window open. Not door. The first time it happened I looked at the windows for like 10 mins thinking one was open. Anyone else have this happen?

That slot is for a parking garage card. I use it for the prox card that lets me into and out of the parking garage at work.

Just as an update

Got an answer back from Toyota. They are saying its a typo on the Windows sticker, and that the 2018s no longer have the RSCA cut off switch. They claim it was due to some regulation by the government that they can no longer be cut off switches for airbags. Something about it came into effect around Sep 2017.

Big brother trying to take care of you so you do not forget to turn them back on I guess........LMAO

That sucks.

I wonder if they adjusted the system to accommodate the removal of the cutoff switch?

I had an off camber situation on the trail where the bags blew (back in my 4R days). It sounded like a shotgun went off in my ear and I was lucky to not get hurt. I got tippy going through some v-ditches but never felt like I was going to roll.

Toyota pulled the data from the "black box" and determined it functioned properly. So I filed an insurance claim to replace the airbags and headliner. My lesson learned is that I use that cutoff switch just about any time I get on the trails.

I wonder if you can just pull the airbag fuse? Yes I'm sure it'd light up the dash like a christmas tree, but if it worked it seems like it'd be straightforward to wire up a switch

I have heard other stories like this as a well. Which is why I liked having the switch in my 100 TLC and FJ. They did try to say there was an automated system to handle it now. But offered nothing in writing or factual.

That's what Chevy Colorado ZR2 owners had to do (pull fuse) prior to last week's "recall". Their side curtain airbags were blowing on very easy roads.

As for the “window open” warning, I do get that when I have a window open. But not if they are all closed tight. If it is the moonroof then it has a specific warning for that. (I have a 2016). Since it always happens I would guess you have a bad “window open” sensor.

Well they all looked shut, but rolled them all down and back up. Sure enough it fixed it. Thanks.
