am i the only fan of royal purple 10 W 30 out here?
Yup, from what I remember in past oil discussions, Royal Purple ranked at the bottom of the synthetic oils, along with the old castrol. It seemed like a pretty bad value anyway, as it was quite a bit more expensive than other synth, but it's been a while since I looked at how much it costs.

Ok thanks! I thought i saw a Mobil 1 mineral based at WalMart the other day but must have been another brand.

Mobil makes a mineral oil, comes in a blue bottle labeled "Mobil".

"Mobil 1", however, is strictly synthetic.

I usw Amsoil mostly because it's easier for me to buy locally (I can buy at their warehouse directly) and is therefore cheaper than paying retail for Mobil 1 (which I used to use). The other reason is that I could buy all the other synthetic stuff I needed (eg both types of grease, gear lube, ATF) at the same place.

Cheers, Hugh

What do you folks think of Valvoline MaxLife (mineral)?
I change every 3000-4000 miles, and my truck doesn't seem to eat much at all.

Also, I take it there are also some strong opinions on filter brands. I've been using Fram P8H. I suspect that some will recommend something different. Why? Please elaborate.

While we're giving opinions on various slippery fluids, why don't we list them all, and why?

Hayes uses:

Motor oil: Valvoline MaxLife (mineral) because the name "MaxLife" gives me warm fuzzies.

Oil Filter: Fram P8HA because the guy at Checker told me to use that one.

Tranny: Valvoline MaxLife DextronIII same reason as motor oil.

Gear Lube: Valvoline 90w because I've apparantly got a thing for Valvoline.

Did I miss anything?

Good day 80 people! Have a FJ60 with 138k....Use it in 20W-50, it made a huge change in engine noise. K&N filter here.

Good read, shocker.
Some meaningful observations there.

I'll not put anymore Frams on my truck.

I ordered a case of Wix 51515s from www.fleetfilter.com for $2.61 each. This should cover my oil changes for a few years.

LMAO. That is the same Filter that fram has made for 30+ years. It was originally speced for Ford small block motors (260/289/302/351w). Fram filters are about as worthless as they get, paper drainback preventers, little filter media, etc.. As others have suggested, Factory, Wix, Napa Gold, are all good filters.

Cruiserheads,

If you have a Camping World in your town, check to see if they have Mobile
One oil on Sale. I just purchased 16 bottles for 3.29 a bottle. That is all they had. I am going to check online too.
