Details on those welding clamps?

Upgraded the light on my welding helmet to something a little more powerful using 18650 rechargeable batteries. Took apart a couple laptop batteries to harvest these take apart a couple laptop batteries to harvest a bunch of these. Just used contact cement to mount. Was on sale for 15, price went up. Wow.

Shop time. Through this work cut a solid 2 inches from the back of the tailgate

Held up the old section, so you can get an idea of how much it stuck out.

Pics. Got the sides cut to size, capped the rockers. Started to look like a truck.

Got a test fit for the bed and how far back we will put the wheels. We decided on putting it roughly 9 in back so there is less of a area to hit when going down ledges when this rig finally hits offroad. Got the sanding on the driver's side nearly done, just got to de-grease the bottom and do the same for the other side...great progress today and definitely had a good day outside!

PS: The bed is not at all held in, this was held up by a couple 2x4s, just to clear that up, it is NOT in yet.

Your dog can't wait to go for a ride. How did the Tacoma bed line up width-wise?

Going to have to add about 2" on each side on the top rail. It will work perfect for the light bar he wants to add.

With adding 9" of frame, we should be able to cut about 8" off the frame length at the rear bumper, giving it a much better departure angle. I keep adding to this project; however, I think that I will cut the frame after the panhard and make it higher and go straight back. This should improve the departure angle and the taco bed was made for a flat frame.

I almost cut the frame and did the same on my project. It will look better if the Tacoma bed was made for a straight frame. With the flatbed the garden between frame and bed makes a convenient spot to tuck lights.

The Tacoma bed looks pretty normal on there. I doubt anyone will know the difference.

Once we skin it with the 80 sheetmetal, it should look pretty slick.

Couple of pics with the bed sitting on there. Here it is first time out in the sunlight

Here it is with the wheel placed about 12 inches back. Did not look right.

So here it is with 9 inches. Like the look, so we have a winner. And yes, that was the engineering behind this.

This sounds like a stupid question but: How will we get the skin to align? Will re-skinning it make it the right size or will more work need to be put in to make it flush with the rest of the car?

Great question Bud. My plan it to take the inside profile that you made early on out of plywood and then use a router bit to make duplicates of that patten in plywood. Think of that as the vertical ribs of the bed side profile. Then we will use wood to connect these patterns together horizontally. Square it up and this should give us a platform to be able to line up the panels and weld them together.

The next important step will take place after the frame is extended and the rear frame is lifted/straightened. That is that we will get the bed exactly where we want it, centered left to right and fab up mounts for it. We will move the wheel well on the bed to be where we want it too.

Then we will get the bed sides that we made and add them to the bed. This will be where we get them exactly where we want them. The sides of the cab and bed should line up nice and the body lines should continue in line.

Here is the question I have for @jcardona1 or @MODist @FJZilla or anyone that has done the rear wheel clearance modification on an 80.

If you had a blank slate, knowing that someday 37's would be used, how big of a wheel well would you make? Wider/taller, what would you want?

To be clear, I plan to use the door skin and quarter skin to make the sides of the bed. I already have to weld at the door seam so adding a few inches of material is easy to do there.
