I just got my FJ80 recently and noticed one of the fasteners for the lower lift gate is missing. It seems like the thread inside is busted as well, so I'd have to replace the entire lower lift gate to fix it the right way. :crybaby: Since that route would be expensive does anyone have any ideas on to fix this? I was thinking maybe I can rethread the hole and just replace it with a regular bolt?

Thanks,

Since that is a hinge point and needs to move, maybe you could install a nutsert(sp) or something and use a proper shouldered bolt.

A nutsert may not be able to withstand the side-load if the gate has a lot of weight put on it. The only way to get the "correct" shouldered bolt is by purchasing a new strap.

If I purchase the new strap with the "correct" bolt I still have the issue of the hole not being threaded correctly, no?

Well Cruiserparts had the bolt for like $4 so I just purchased it from them and I'll see what I can do with the bolt.

I just encountered the same problem - any update on how you fixed this? I happened to hear the bold drop so still have it. Thanks!

I ended up using a nutsert. It's been 4 years and holding up fine even with me standing on the liftgate.

Thanks for the update - I actually was able to pull off the cover and there is an access square (about 4" wide) that I was able to reach into, grab the nut that fell off inside the tailgate and hold it while I put it back together. Was quite easy. Thanks again for the reply!
