Fan Clutch

Hey All(see how I include everyone, even those who don't know what they are),
I have had my pig beast in pieces for a while now trying to juggle home projects and install power steering/general pig maintenance stuff.
I bought a fan clutch a while back, Aisin(FCT-017). I got it because I wanted to replace the existing one that didn't work. I never would hear one kick in, especially on long slow climbs when I could see the temp starting to rise. removed the radiator and noticed I don't have one! Foolish me! Never bothered to look and see one inside the fan.
I cannot remember how I got this part number, but I have a clutch. My last Cruiser was a '79 FJ40 that had one. My '72 40 was V8 powered, so don't count. The 40 seemed to have a lot more room up front too?
The "Differences by year" sticky thread has no mention of this. Might be good information for someone.
I believe I can add one with the right combination of pully, fan, pump, and clutch. My question is do you think it really matters or can this make a difference in cooling? I may do a engine swap at some point, but who knows when. Thanks.

It’s not going to make a difference with cooling. I thought most F and 2F engines had a fan that bolted directly to the water pump and spun at engine speed. A fan clutch won’t spin at the same speed as the water pump is turning until the temperature rises enough to lock it in, at which point it will spin at engine speed, not faster.
My understanding is that a fan clutch is designed to allow the engine to remain at operating temp in lower ambient temperatures, allowing the coolant to stay warmer. And then there’s the reduction of parasitic drag until it’s absolutely necessary for the fan to spin at full speed.

The 40 seemed to have a lot more room up front too?

Yup, 40s have more room between the block and radiator. I don't think there's enough room to run a fanclutch on a 55

Cool. I'm just going to reinstall the old fan and forgo the clutch. An engine swap might be in my distant future anyway. Thanks MUD

Yup, 40s have more room between the block and radiator. I don't think there's enough room to run a fanclutch on a 55

Fwiw, many 40's and 55's did come from the factory with an AISIN fan clutch. The water pump and pulley are the difference.

Just depends on market, trim, etc. Globally the fixed fan or clutch were not a solo option on the 4x or 5x, both were offered.

If the fan clutch came from Cruiser Outfitters (or CruiserTeq), shoot us an email with your order number and vehicle details. We lookup the fan clutch we sold you, your vehicle specs and then can tell you what water pump, pulley and fan blade you would need to run the fan clutch.
