I decided to put new fluid in my fan clutch, and do a write up on it.
This is a fan clutch on a 1985 HJ60. It may be the original one, and if not, then still probably quite old.
The original Aisin one has 8 screws, whereas the aftermarket ones seem have 4 screws (for the 2H/12HT that is).
This one may be an Aisin, but I am not sure as there is no writing on it, just a bit of red paint on a small part of it.
As stated in other writeups on the subject, the screws are very tight and difficult to remove. I used the correct philips head, yet the screws still got striped.
So I used a 9mm socket to hammer the screw into the shape of a bolt.
After that, they came out quite easily.
The two halves were seperated and the draining started:
Two hours later, about 40ml had drained:
Two days later, another 10ml bringing the total to 50ml thus far:
After 4 days, it drained to a bit under the 60ml mark, I'd say 56-58ml:
Here's the silicone tubes: Toyota part number 08816-10001, 10,000 cst, 18ml per tube.
Also decided to replace the screws with bolts to make life a bit easier next time round:
Here I'm refilling it again:
Close to 36ml so far, almost 2 tubes.
I do have a question though. How much should I put in?
The obvious answer would be: as much as came out, as stated in similar threads. But what if the original amount was wrong. Previous owner/mechanic may have put too much or even too little in. Is there a sure way to tell when it is sufficiently filled?
(will post the results as soon as I've filled it up and put it back on again)
