My "nuts" we also corroded (locked) on. The stud did come out of the old fan. I put it in a vise, and unscrewed the "nuts", and put them on the new fan. The only thing I was wondering is should I have put some thread lock on them.

Which set from Sears

the metric ones?

:D

I got mine from Sears as well, but got the gear wrench brand because it was about 10 bucks cheaper.

mine's the flex head without the switch.

How do you break off these nuts if the shoulders get round it off?

Has anyone used heat to loosen them before the nuts are ruined? Or hammering in some way?

When this happened on my 96 model the only thing that worked was a pair of Milwaukee Torque lock Vice Grips.

They have an eyelet that allows you to crank down on the jaws (using a screw driver for example) much more than with the old style of vice grips. I cranked it so much it deformed the old nuts but they all came off.

There are plain models of vice grips without the rubber grips and another type with, here's one example. IIRC I used the smaller pair to get to the nuts:
