I just replaced the fan clutch on my '96 LX450. The old one "felt" just like the new one, but I replaced it anyway since I have been having ocassional overheating problems in summer.

I read somewhere (?) that the coil spring fatigues, causing lack of lock-up, even if there is enough silicone in the hub. The spring controls the movement of the plate over the oriface inside the hub. When the spring gets tired, the oriface doesn't get retricted enough.

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks. John

John,

Hang on to that clutch, eh? If you're gonna toss it, I've always wanted to open one up and check it out and I live here in CDA.

I cannot answer the technical side of you question but I replaced mine last spring and before I never heard the fan roar, now it roars (lockup) for a few seconds after start and when I sit in traffic with the AC on, IE the times it should.

its not that exciting.....I got 2-3 of them opened up.......not much to see

I've opened one up and refilled with the silicon oil. There are even 2 viscosities of this oil and I used the thick stuff. It worked great, but due to the paranoia from this board, I promptly ordered a brand new one from CDan. If you do open it up, be careful with the Oring between the body halves.

John, you out there?
