I remember some talk, but don't know if anyone has penciled in a fall colors run. I would like to go the weekend after next; and maybe just make it a drive on the loop road near 4th of July campground. Maybe even a drive/walk/lunch at the Crest this weekend?

sounds interesting...

I was up in the Mt. Taylor area this past weekend, headed in through the Laguna Reservation and then up the backside of Mt. Taylor on FR 400 and there were some amazing leaves changing colors. That area is only an hour west of us. Might also be a nice option. Great camping, nice off roading as well. Jericho/Crystal and I checked out about 2 weeks ago as well.

I am going out towards that area tomorrow again for school. We have a build site out in El Malpais and that area is way cool. I don't know if there is much wheeling out by the lava flows, but the area in general has some cool features.

I haven't spoken with the wife yet, but I do plan to go together. This means nothing short of (paved) dirt road. Taylor might be ok, but even the ruts and rocks at the Malpais are just out of our spectrum right now.maybe more like a picnic nature walk thing.

We set our date for Saturday. If we can get out of the house early enough, we'll try fourth of July; otherwise, we'll just hit the crest. If anyone else plans on going, we can make a more concrete plan.

Hey beno, is the route that you took, the nm4w route? From looking at the pics, it really looked smooth.

not a tremendous amount of colors at the crest I'm afraid. I was there last week. FYI.

I'm not sure if the route I took was on the NM4W website.

Jericho/Crystal and I went the front route up Rt. 547 then into the forest roads up in the Mt. Taylor area and we just spent two days exploring going on different routes, etc. Most of it was very simple, nothing too crazy. Nice leisurely driving. Some mud, some ruts, etc.

Here are some pics of this past weekend and the camping spot we found that I went back to because it was so nicely isolated and peaceful. I went up the backside (eastern side) of Mt. Taylor up FR 400.

The colors in Utah are spectacular.

4th of july canyon was pretty yesterday. near but not at peak color. fyi.

Just back from several days in Utah. Colors there and in N. Arizona and New Mexico are spectacular.

That looks like the American Canyon area on FR 451.

Went looking for leaves in Colorado earlier in the week and got this:cool::

Leaves are gone at high elevations. This was just below Molas Pass. Bring on the snow.
