Hello,

Lurked for a while and finally have something to contribute.

I have always liked the look of the low profile pioneer/backbone combo on the 460 but haven't been thrilled with all the wind noise it created. I researched fairing solutions and read that the factory rhino rack fairing is garbage (reduced mpg, ducts the air through the slats, and $$$). Bumping into others in the same boat at GXOR meets, people have tried to adapt yakima fairings and others for limited success.

I just finished mine over this weekend and am really liking the results. I took some inspiration from a member in the LC200 forum (Rhino Rack (Pioneer Platform with Backbone rails) and Wind Noise Solution(s) - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/rhino-rack-pioneer-platform-with-backbone-rails-and-wind-noise-solution-s.1286914/) and ran with it.

So here is the 95% finished product! Still a few things to finish off... but it works really well. I'd say 70-80% reduction in wind noise.

I utilized "2020" aluminum extrusion strut materials, and only fabricated a few parts.

Off the shelf rhino rack M8 channel nut and hardware (spares that came with my platform), and 2020 series 135* gusseted aluminum extrusion. I used my mill and enlarged the m5 hole to an m8 hole to accommodate.

I bought 2 x 4 packs of these brackets, but figured 6 was plenty for a ~48" fairing.

I picked up 2" wide, 3/16" thick aluminum bar stock to fabricate small spacers to clear the lip on the front, and large enough to help distribute the load to the whole rack member.

Ended up making the spacers an inch wide so they'd tuck up as outboard as possible on the ends.

Repeat 6 more times.....

Obtain 20mmx100 5 section aluminum "2020" series extrusion. This is 1200mm long (just under 48").
Attached using 2020 m5 x 12mm hardware and t nuts.

Grab a mate, attempt cardboard template....

Test fit....

Make a few more tweaks.... and commit.
This iteration is 1/4" Black Lexan

Install using 6 sets of 3 m5x12mm and t slot nuts.

the 95% finished product. Weatherstrip/Edging for bottom is on it's way, and I'm 3d printing end caps for the 2020 strut for a nice finished look.

If i make a second iteration of the fairing, I'd make it slightly taller at the top to eliminate any gap between the rack and the fairing. Already have it drafted up....

Hope all this is helpful to anyone else with a Rhino Pioneer. I can dig up links and part numbers and share drawings.

Too bad you didn't post something here about fairings, or if you did, I missed it.
If you go to my build thread starting at post #70: Builds - R²M 2013 GX 460 Overland Build - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/r-m-2013-gx-460-overland-build.1104719/page-4
I detail how I made mine and I have a PDF of the plans. I've been offering them to anyone who PM's me for one and I'll email them the files since we can't post PDF's on the forum. I can send them in several formats: SolidWorks (what I made them in), DWG, DXF, PDF, etc. They just need to be printed out at 100% (full scale) on 11" x 17" paper and splice them together at the indicated lines and you'll have a full fairing.
Albeit, the mounting points will change because I have a Gamiviti rack, but the hard part is getting the roof arch.

r2m - very cool! I had not run across your post in my search. Very nice build!

However, it looks like your gamiviti rack is a steeper angle than my approach? That being said, we may be looking at different curved sections of the same roof. Happy to share mine with you if you wanted to see how different/similar they were?

You may be right about the rack of the fairing. Gamiviti offered a fairing, but it was black and I had the light bar and wanted to cut the wind noise over the light bar so I made my own clear fairing.
Although credit to Tim at Gamiviti for giving me a base template to work from, but I had to make mine higher so it tucked under the RTT.

I would love a copy of the fairing drawing. I've been struggle-bussing my own solution with popsicle sticks and hot glue. So far I keep getting things askew when transferring to polycarbonate.

Unless you're really enjoying your time with popsicle sticks, if you PM me, I can send you a PDF that will be three 11" x 17" pages of the fairing I made for my Gamiviti rack. It will have the curvature already. Just print the three pages and 100% (full size), trim and tape together along the trim lines. Then transfer it over to a length of cardboard or whatever. The holes you can dismiss and place new ones in whatever location you need for mounting.
Here's the link to the fairing I built for my rig starting at post #70: Builds - R²M 2013 GX 460 Overland Build - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/r-m-2013-gx-460-overland-build.1104719/page-4
