I was wondering if factory lockers were an option at all for US 60/62. more importanly 62's. I understand they were availiable for non US but not here in the states.
I went looking for some 3rd members to swap into my'85 60 becouse I going to be running 33's. I found a set of '89 3rds and he said that the rear is locked. I am not sure what to look for if it is a factory locker .. any help would be much appreciated.. he is asking 150.00 for each.
I guess that price is ok ?
also to make sure they are 4.11's or is it 4.10's what number will be stamped on the ring set.

Never heard of a US 62 with factory lockers. It must be an aftermarket unit. Do you have any pics of it?

They'll be 4.11s... 37 tooth ring / 9 tooth pinion = 4.1111111 ratio. If you don't see any markings, you can count the teeth.

I think $150/each isn't too bad if they don't need any work. I paid $220/each shipped from Cruiserparts and ended up needing to get one of them rebuilt (+/- $150). If you have a locker, it makes it that much better.

Thanks..I am going to look at them either tonight or tuesday night. I am really wanting to run 35's and get 4.88's but do not have the cash yet.. becouse from what i have been reading 4.11's really isnt enough gear to run 35's even out here in west texas where its about as flat as it gets.
I have barn spankin new a/c - heater unit that I bought from Nostalgic Air about a year ago to install in my fj55 but had to sell the pig so never installed it and also have a used black kayline full soft top w/ doors and tailgate from my fj40 that i need to sell also. So maybe between the two i can get enough money.

I think there was a factory option for cable locking third members for the 60 series, including the 62. At least the third members show up in the parts microfiche. They were not offered in the US, but maybe Canada. If it is a cable locking third there will be covered level on the side of the third where the cable attaches. If this is what the guy has, make sure you get a line on the cable assembly and the acutating levers (that install where the cup holders go).

I don't know the answer, but you should confirm that the cable locking differental (if it is one) will work with a semi-floating axle. They also made full floating axles for the 60 series and the cable locking differential could be an option only for that axle and may not work in a semi floating axle. The parts microfiche implies that the cable locker only works in the full floating axle because the axle diagram shows extra parts for "w/ differential lock" for the full floating axle, but not for the semi-floating axle.

The stock final gear ratio is 37:9, that is 37 teeth on the ring and 9 teeth on the pinion, which is 4.11. the ring should be stamped with 37:9, not 4.11 though.

I don't know if we got cable lockers up here or not, but they do appear as optional equipment in my 62 owner's manual, so I would think some made it to market. Did they appear in the manual in the states? I'm pretty sure that factory cable lockers would come as a pair, not just rear.

I wasn't able to get to them tonight so with any luck i'll be able to check them out tomarrow. He has the complete front and rear axles so i'll just call and ask if the rear happens to be a FF or SF. If it is a FF rear what is something like that worth.

are you saying a full floating complete rear axle w/ locker ( maybe factory cable locker) is only worth 150. I figured just for the 3rd member was going to run 150..

from what I understand...... factory cable lockers where never offered in the US or Canada; other countries recieved them and I believe they came only in full floating axles. Complete sets of 60 series cable locking axles can go for a pretty penny around 3K if you can find them...

So most likely what you have found is an after market locker installed in the diff. either way $150 is a good deal on a locked 3rd

I'm not saying you are wrong, but the cable locking differentials do show up in the parts microfiche that covers USA and Canada. I'm pretty sure they were not offered in the USA.

no worries; I could be wrong on the canada part for sure....... def. weren't offered in the US though; and its a shame :crybaby:

The 60 series factory locker is unmistakable in appearance. You can easily see the external linkage set up where the cable attaches as shown in the diagram a few posts above this.
There is also some wiring connected to a switch which operates a locked/unlocked warning light up on the dash.
I have only seen them fitted to the FF axle system.
Like someone else said, the factory lockers can bring big money IF you can find a set.

Yes, my manual has the cable lockers shown, and like the electric lockers in the 80 series, if they were equipped, they had front and rear. I think they put them in the owner's manual just to tease us.

No they was not.......At one time I thought the 62's had them but Toyota confirmed they did not....but the parts was a available then according to them.

Option on my 61, were not offered in North America. Only on FF. I've been offered 5k for my axles! That's crazy (but I still didn't sell).
