Factory CD Player not Working (7 Viewers)

G'day all - location is Melbourne Australia - Vehicle is a '95 80 series GXL (normally aspirated diesel, 150,000 km) - done a reasonable amount of outback travel and has got very dusty at various times (inside & out). Problem is the factory CD player has stopped working - accepts the CD's but nothing happens - sometimes an error on the LCD disply. CD ejects OK on command. My questions are:
- is the player & radio a rebadged pioneer brand ? if not what is the brand ?
- who in Melbourne could fix/ replace the unit?
- or should I ust replace the whole radio/ cd player with another brand?

On mine I cleaned the scan rails of the read unit. Some have used one of thoe head cleaners but that's pretty brutal on a unit but as a last resort it can't do any harm. I've since replaced my unit with an aftermarket one with MP3 ability. This is some cool stuff, over 100 songs per disk, much better than a changer unless that had MP3 abitlity.

If you can't clean it yourself I'd drop kick it into the round filing cabinet and go with a new aftermarket one.

well the 93 i bought last dec, back in Sept, cd player just plain died on me....swapped it out with a new Alpine CD player...big difference now.....enjoying it along with the new front/rear speakers i put in.

the unit in mine is a Pioneer.
The one in my bother in law's is a Nakamichi (a '98)
The one in my sisters is a Leviinson.

I have a 97' with the in-dash 3 disk changer. The whole unit is a "double din" I beieve, but split into 2 pieces, and atleast the disk changer portion is made by Alpine. I confirmed this with C-Dan awhile back. You can even use the Alpine 3-Disk cartrige in the changer. I guess I would assume they built the lower unit with the tape deck and radio in it as well. I have heard Nakamichi makes the single CD unit.

I like the looks of my stock head unit, '96 FZJ80, and had the reguritating CD problem that seems endemic to these things. I had the stereo repaired at, www.carstereohelp.com, the guy that owns is knows his stuff and is a good guy. You just mail him the whole head unit, I think he's in Florida, and a few weeks later he sends it back. I think it comes with a one year warranty and costs over $200. Mine has been working like a charm over 2 years now.

If it has the 10 disc changer it is probably a Pioneer. It is even stamped Pioneer right on the bottom. I had the misfortune of having to remove the whole system out of my dad's 97 and sending it and then reinstalling it months later.


I would go aftermarket, because of your dust conditions I would recommend something with a mechanical flip down face. Mechanical as the dust eats the motors up the flip the face down. Flip face because that is just one more level before the dirt can get inside. I'm running Sonys in both of my 80s and I'm happy with them. MP3s are very nice. I have a single MP3 player in my 94 and a 10 disc changer MP3 player in the 91. Basically, I cannot afford to drive as far as I can go on 10 discs filled with MP3s.

Thanks everybody - probably go for a replacement unit (radio & CD player) - vibration & dust are probably going to limit the life of whatever I put in. Repair bill for the CD unit is a very good start for a complete replacement unit. If the CD player was a solid performer I might consider repairing it - but it seems that many people have experienced similar problems with the CD unit.

I'll just throw it out that my alpine unit in my 40 has held up very very well to open weather. (my 40 is almost always topless).

Alpines used to have a really good felt system that filtered dirt out. However, I've found that the newer units do not have the same quality felt to block out dirt. The car stereo place suggested the Sony unit with the flip face after I returned the 6th Alpine unit. Also, it takes about 90 days to get an Alpine back from repair and they don't give loaners.

you can try www.oemvalue.com and I know they do swap outs and repairs with units. Or do like me and buy the 2005 toyota nav, not sure it'll work in ausi.

Did you install that nav in your 97?? If so do you have any pictures, comments, etc about it? How hard was it to wire up?

Price seems steep but compared to over in dash units that have the same functions.

I haven't got the system yet...I'm trying to share what little cash I have between the cars. I did install it in my supra....with the harness they supply it was cake, other than some trim because of the larger size. But with patience keeping it clean cut was not a problem, looks great and I love the factory look.

I think going in the 80's dash may be harder because of the a/c control box is so close to the headunit...I'm sure I can get over that.
I'll put pictures up as soon as I get it, step by setp.
I agree the price is high but the new JBL amp sounds sooo much better and it is cheaper than any aftermarkets....oh and they have options for rearview cameras and input for a dvd player.
