Perhaps I have too much time on my hands, but is there a way to modify the F (9/72) engine oiling system for full pressure/flow system? or are there any mods to help the anemic oil system

Is your oil pressure good? The by-pass system of the F motor is known to run many thousands of miles without significant oiling related problems. If you are needing a rebuild, go to a 2F or at least a '74 F-and-a-half transitional motor.
Rebuild costs of an F and 2F are almost identical.

AndrewFarmer had a post on oiling mods, but even those have a trade-off.

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a 74 F transitional motor...I have a Dec. 74......Thanks.

Then that's what you have!

The transitional motor had the 2F oiling system, shared the crankshaft with the 2F, but had F engine features as well, and was labelled an F155.

Sweet....I feel very special now.....:)

ok, my oil pressure is good, and I just had my engine rebuilt...but I was thinking to my self:
there are three "fittings" on the engine block inside the oil pan - one for the oil supply from pump, one for the oil return from the filter, and the last one is a oil return from block?
my thought: if I were to put the oil flow from the pump to the oil filter return line and put a plug on the orriginal oil supply line fitting, then redrill and tap? or build a new bolt on plate for where the oil pressure reg/filter reg was and run larger lines to a remote filter....would it work (upgrade to a 2f oil pump) as a better oil system ie more pressure and flow?

Man you must have been reading my mind! ;)

I was wondering the exact same thing yesterday! I was wondering if such a mod would still need an oil pressure regulater?

I do know that the 2F pump will work but you may have to 'clearance' the oil pan a bit...

Hi Guys,

I have a '74 FJ40 VIN 179831 (Aug/Sep) with F engine number F554256 (8/74). Is this a transitional engine? I suppose I should know it by looking at the oil setup, but the cuiser is home and I'm at work...

Thanks!

Rob

coolerman, do you have more schematic drawings or do you know where to find them?
My understanding is that the 2f oil pump has the oil pressure reg built in to it...is that correct?
It seems as though if it were this simple to change the oil system it would be in tech?

Yes, that would be one of the last F engines. If the oil filter is on the passenger side of the engine, it is either the transitional F or a 2F.

I've installed a 2F oil pump and eliminated the external regulator on a F.... it all works ok, but you would still just have a by-pass filter system.... nothing gained in filtration.... the pic shows 2F oiling.....

using the picture...i modified it to my idea. Cap the old oil supply line from pump and use the filter return line for the supply to filter/engine. obviously reverse the oil lines at the filter, also use larger (3/8) line from block to filter.

I dunno Man... the line from the pump to the block would have to meet or beat the original for me to have peace of mind.... iffn it were to crack or break because of vibration or other causes? a seizure will occur........ post your ideas on the integrity of the supply line........

Well I guess that answered the question about the regulator. Exactly what did you have to do to the oil pan to make this work?

Do some trimming on the baffle in the sump to clear the pump........

Nope, looks like the oil FILLER is on the passenger side, not the FILTER. Look for a flat, machined spot about 2.5" long between the starter and the distributor. Clean it off with some thinner and a ScotchBrite pad or steel wool and see what it says. Probably "Fxxxxxx" the go to the SOR website and figure out what you have. I bought parts for a '66 motor because I had a '66 cruiser......then I found MUD:D Motor was a '74 F-and-a-half, the parts I ordered did not fit.
Check the engine# and save yourself a lot of time and $$.

Here you go.......................

Filler. Filter. Such a niggler for details.
