Stuck between a rock and a hard place
Decided that my eternal quest for data extended to the outside temp...I am used to my other vehicles which let me know if the roads are approaching freezing, or if I am going to ride my bike in town (I live in the hills) if the temps are colder or warmer, so I can choose the right clothing.

Looked on eBay, and found what appeared to be a very simple press-in solution for a whopping $2.13 shipped, yes under two-bucks to my door from Hong Kong. It was worth the gamble to see if it would look good or match the truck. About 10 days after ordering, the package arrived.

Not a bad match as the LCD looked just like the one on the radio. It was just a tad larger than the factory switch openings, so I looked at where to mount, and decided on the shift console.

So, here are a few shots. First of the hole, which I made by drilling the corners, then cut out with a box-cutter very carefully between. Then I filed it to the exact size so that the unit fit snugly.

The sensor wire was less than three feet, so I went to RadioShack and bought a 12-foot shielded 1/8" plug extension cord which I then used to "extend" the sensor. The sensor line I extended through the firewall, and out just behind the bumper, as to get as little influence from the truck on the temps, but to shield from the elements.

Total investment, perhaps $10, time maybe an hour to do the soldering, cutting, routing, etc.

The only drawback for some would be that it is in Celsius (fine by me) and that it runs on it's own battery, thus not backlit at night.

Thinking of buying a few extra in case this one craps-out, as they are so cheap...cheaper than buying the button batteries.

nice.

been meaning to put one in under the hood myself to figure out what the temps are under there. You could also stick the sensor for one to the coolant outlet off the head, which would give you a good estimate of the coolant temp.

Heck, you could have a whole battery of these things, there is plenty of room in the console... :)

what kind of sensor and leads are those? (if the sensor is a resistance based device, a la RTD or thermistor, the extra leads could mess things up, btw)

You got to wonder how they can it for the price. Would be good to run a wire back to the Engel fridge

I also noticed these thermometers a while back but I am going to buy ones that have a temp range up to +150*C and an alarm. This would let me put one in the cooling system or engine head and set the alarm trigger somewhere above 100*C. Their cost is around $15 and they look just as the one above. I wonder why I've never seen a car with a temp alarm. Only the needles with red zone. If something happens and you don't look at the temp gauge too often (like every 5 minutes) then you are in trouble.

very interesting. nice find.

have you checked to see if the temp is more or less accurate? especially with your extension?
if so, I think it would be great to have a couple- 1 for exterior, 1 interior temp, another for a fridge, etc. heck, for $2, slap one on the cooler. Just for fun.

It is within 1 degree from my Audi. The only difference is that it samples more frequently, and definitely goes up at the stoplight when the engine heat is drifting forward. For my use, it is great. Heading up skiing this weekend, so definitely will be putting it to the test in the snow.

X2 on the "great find". Can't beat that price! Thanks for sharing, Steve! For those who are hesitating due to Celsius readout: the important one is the freezing temp, which of course is 32*Fahrenheit, but is easily remembered in Celsius 'cause it's 0*.

And water's boiling point is 100*, compared to 212* F.

Lived in Europe for almost eight years, so I am now more familiar with C than F. To me the scale was

Below 0 = effing cold
0-10 = cold
11-20 = better
20-30 = good and warm
30+ = effing hot

Works for me.

Ordered this one and just received it. It didn't come with batteries as advertised. 12v only powers the backlight. Looks cheap and probably wasn't worth the $8 bucks delivered from China.

It's hard to believe you can't find a decent 12v powered temperature gauge for a car anywhere....not that I've seen anyway, and I've looked...

Oh, and I should have payed more attention to the dimensions in CM, this thing is huge!

You have got to be kidding. You need a digital thermometer to know if it's cold outside? Rolling down the window works too.

I think there is a large contingent of folks around the world that enjoy knowing the exact outside temperature.

Obviously, you don't drive much on wet roads when the temp is near freezing or you wouldn't be asking that question.

Agreed. I can't tell a 2* difference by rolling down the window, all I know is that anything under 50* (F) is freaking cold...especially at 70 MPH!
