Exploded Winch! (1 Viewer)

I was given this Ramsey RE8000 winch the other day. It was hooked to a winch truck and the truck rolled backwards (no one was in it) against a wall which caused the remote to be activated which started spooling the winch up. The winch bound up so tight it caused it to explode. Does anyone know if this winch can be salvaged. If it costs a few hundred bucks to get fixed, then I'll send it in and have it done. If it is going to cost something close to the price of a new winch then I'll trash it.

So what do you think?

My un-educated guess is "not repairable" due to it being the cast metal housing that blew up.

this site makes it sound like repairs happen to moving parts: http://www.ramsey.com/rrp.html, but it does give you a # to call.

Since a new one will set you back a grand its worth a call tho, eh?

That is a pretty major failure. I would call for sure and ask for a replacement and see what they say.

wow, that's a pretty thick casting. Must have taken a serious hit.

Between that and duct tape, I should have it up and running in no time.

Something you could try if no replacement casting is available, would be to weld it with a rod specific to cast. They are available and if the proper procedure is followed, a reasonable repair can occur. Try taking it around to some welding/machine shops and see what they have to say. Might be worth a try if the price is right.

You could be right. The timing chain on our Saab broke and the dealer glued a break in the cover(casting) with some sort of super epoxy and it's been fine. Saved us $900.00
