What is the preference on this forum for tailpipe? Best spot to reduce fumes in cab? After doing research looks like I see more out the rear bumper area than out the corner. Does it make a difference running out the corner from the rear bumper area? I have no top on my cruiser, just a bimini.

Here is a pic of where the exhaust shop mounted my new muffler. I can smell fumes at times, but not always. They were cool and said if I did not like it to come back and they would move it to any location I wanted.

With your current configuration it is more likely to draw in exhaust fumes which creates a deleterious condition, there's a lot of air turbulence in the rear of your 40 and the exhaust gases get sucked in the cab area. Your best bet is to route the tailpipe to the corner of the tub as it was originally designed by Toyota.

Here's a wind tunnel test for a truck, notice the turbulent air flow and how easy it is to draw in exhaust gas fumes

If I leave the rear of my soft top rolled up on a trail run, like I'd like, the whole inside gets a thick coating of dust. I would assume that if the exhaust came out the back it would also get sucked into the interior. Mine comes out the corner. I've seen some custom jobs that came out of the quarter panel and others that came out the corner of the bumper.

Interesting about this is there are many custom Jeep exhausts that are being routed out the back with dual tailpipes. I have also seen a lot of cruiser pics with guys running them out the back under rear bumper area. I just don't want to waste there time if moving it won't really do much. Even my 04 sequoia has the pipe coming right out the back under rear bumper

Your choice, your health. If you don't smell exhaust fumes please don't think that carbon monoxide doesn't exist in your cab.

Case closed.

I appreciate the info, I just did not understand why so many "Jeeps" are running them out the back, seems like it would be the same issue with any vehicle. Regardless, I will be going out the side, whatever will prevent the most fumes from entering the cab area.

I have the same issue with my Rhino, dual exhaust, it doesn't matter how slow or fast I'm going I get a lung full of crap even when the top canvas is on. I also installed two turn down elbows, not shown here, for the exhaust and no change.

My exhaust is in the same location as yours and I don't get a noticeable amount of fumes coming back in the cab even with my rear hatch open and never smelled a whiff with the top off. The 42 year old engine has a definite and distinct exhaust smell so it would be noticeable if it was dumping back inside enough to be a concern. If my seals were bad, I might think it was due to air creeping in diffusing the smell but after new seals, it's as air tight as a 40 gets.

I just replaced exhaust manifold gasket, and the collector gaskets. I am pretty confident I have no exhaust leaks. Are you running without a top, no doors, and bikini top only? I am sure there are different variances with whatever top/door combo you have which will create different venturi affects. It makes sense having it come out the side, push the fumes outward to get away from the suction area of it being vacuumed back into the cab.
