While under the 93 working on the rear bumper brackets I noticed the tail pipe is pretty heavily sooted. I don't remember seeing this before I cut off the resonator.
Is it time to contact Dan for a tuneup parts list or do I have something more sinister going on.

Sounds normal to me.

The soot is normal or needing a tuneup at 159,000 is normal?

Normal normal, as in what a normal vehicle normally looks like most normally.

IE, 'taint broken.

I think you need a new soot trap and Cdan's being kind about it. It's not a topic generally broached around here because of the difficulty in installation. They're relatively cheap, but be sure you get the one that screws on counterclockwise (English threads to prevent loosening) and the updated double port version. There are aftermarket replacements, but it's worth a bit more for the OEM Toyota one as it's stainless.

I've never heard of a " soot trap " before. If it's available, I'd like one. My LC blows out a cloud whenever I do heavy acceleration. What do they look like and what's the technical name ?

Didn't do me any good. I just took mine off and chucked it. If I still had it I'd send you mine.

well, whether the soot is normal or not would depend on whether it's on the inside or outside of the tail pipe... :D

yea, definitely go for the soot trap. Just remember to empty it every 10K or so. Some idi@ts don't and the backpressure increases dramatically.... not good!

I disagree. I saved $256 on an aftermarket soot trap at soot.com. You are right, installation was hell.

That reminds me, I need a set of muffler bearings, got any in stock?

Honestly, they really do make some " soot trap " stuff in my part of the world. Lot's of deisels here. Unfortunately, so far, I haven't yet found one that makes sense and have been thinking of DIY loosely based on a curtain in an expansion chamber attached with hose clamps. Problem is, it's more cost effective for me to maintain my engine properly.
